Volkswagen has officially teased its upcoming compact SUV for the Indian market, giving us the first glimpse of the model ahead of its planned launch in 2027. The teaser image, however, keeps most of the SUV hidden under a blue cover and reveals very little about its overall design. What can be seen is the outline of the front end, along with the impression of the Volkswagen badge, while the shape of the headlamps appears reminiscent of the Volkswagen Tera sold in global markets.
The teaser comes shortly after Volkswagen confirmed that it will enter India's sub-4-metre SUV segment with an all-new model scheduled to arrive in 2027. The upcoming SUV will be locally manufactured and based on the MQB-A0-IN architecture, strengthening Volkswagen's presence in one of the country's most competitive passenger vehicle categories.

Volkswagen has not revealed the name of the new SUV yet. While the teaser does not confirm its connection with the Tera, the resemblance in the headlamp treatment is interesting, particularly since the Tera is a compact Volkswagen SUV sold in Brazil and shares its broader engineering roots with the products developed around the MQB-A0 family. As of now, we do not know whether Volkswagen is planning to bring a localised version of the Tera or if it will be someone else.
Volkswagen's new SUV to take on Venue, Nexon and Brezza
The new Volkswagen SUV will enter India's sub-4-metre category, which is already populated by some of the country's biggest sellers. The Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Kia Sonet and Mahindra XUV 3XO are among the key players in this segment.
Volkswagen has largely stayed away from this space in recent years, with the Taigun positioned above the sub-4-metre category. The new model will therefore give the German carmaker a significantly smaller and more accessible SUV than the Taigun, while also helping it tap into a much larger customer base.
The company says the new SUV is being developed specifically for India, with a focus on localisation and adaptation to local market requirements. Volkswagen is also positioning the model around its traditional strengths of safety, engineering, build quality and driving dynamics.
The move is significant for Volkswagen's India strategy as the company looks to broaden its product portfolio beyond the Taigun and Virtus. The new SUV will also be Volkswagen's first major entry into this particular segment after the Polo was discontinued in India.
Based on MQB-A0-IN platform
Under the skin, the upcoming Volkswagen SUV will use the MQB-A0-IN platform. This India-specific version of Volkswagen Group's modular architecture already underpins the Taigun and Virtus, along with their Skoda counterparts, the Kushaq and Slavia. The Skoda Kylaq is also based on the same platform.
This common architecture should allow Volkswagen to share technology, components and engineering across products while keeping manufacturing costs in check through localisation. The new SUV is expected to share significant hardware with the Kylaq, although Volkswagen is likely to give it a distinct exterior and cabin design to differentiate it from its Skoda sibling.
1.0-litre TSI engine expected
Volkswagen has not announced the mechanical specifications of the new SUV yet. However, the model is expected to use the brand's familiar 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine.
In the Skoda Kylaq, this engine produces around 115 PS and 178 Nm and is available with a six-speed manual as well as a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The same basic powertrain is therefore a strong possibility for Volkswagen's compact SUV.
Launch timeline
Volkswagen has confirmed that the new sub-4-metre SUV will launch in India in 2027. More details about its name, dimensions, features, engine specifications, variants and pricing are expected to emerge in the months leading up to its market launch.
