Myth busters on Electric Vehicles

Rapid advancements in battery technology is allowing range-per-charge of an EV to be nearly at par with its combustion-engine counterpart with a full tank of fuel. A mass-market electric car or two-wheeler can extract maximum possible range based on a variety of conditions like driving/riding style, ambient temperature, cabin weight etc. While EVs require some degree of planning, especially during long-distance journeys, range anxieties are steadily coming down.
The number of public charging stations in India is expanding at lightning pace in a public-private partnership model. Many of the major highways in the country are also now getting EV charging points that will allow such vehicles to go the distance. While studies show that EVs are primarily powered at home, an increasing number of charging points on roads augers well. For EVs that allow for battery-swapping, there are such stations coming up as well. And while it is true that access to fuel stations is far easier, EV charging and battery-swapping points too will soon become very common.
While true to some extent, the charging time for EVs is also on the downward slide. Home-charging stations can call for overnight charging but there are many fast-charging options available to end customers - both at their preferred locations and in public spaces. Using these, most electric cars can be powered to full in around three to four hours while electric two-wheelers take lesser time still.
There is a solid reason why almost every EV manufacturer offers warranty on the battery pack. Yes, batteries inside an EV are the most expensive component but an extended warranty goes a long way in easing drive or ride tensions.
The number of EV options in the Indian automotive market has expanded significantly over the past several years. And the number of choices continue to increase. In the particular case of electric two-wheelers, a number of new players have entered the fray. In the domain of electric cars, options in mass-market as well as luxury space continues to rise.

Electric Vehicles FAQs

Land Rover Range Rover, Tata Punch EV, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Tata Nexon EV, Toyota Camry are the most popular electric cars in India with starting price at Rs. 10.99 Lakhs.
TVS iQube Electric, Ola Electric S1 Pro, Ather Energy 450x, Bajaj Chetak, Vida V1 are the most popular electric bikes in India with starting price at Rs. 97,800.
Charging time for electric vehicles depends on a number of factors. Both cars and two-wheelers usually come with two charging options. The first and most convenient one is the home charger. Most of the OEMs offer home chargers along with their EVs. Typically, home charging units are the slowest and may take up to 7-8 hours to fully recharge the vehicle. The second way to charge an EV is to use public charging stations. In India such charging outlets are either operated by govt-appointed agencies or private players. Public charging stations can be categorised broadly in two parts - the slow charger and the fast charger. Depending on the charging capacity of the vehicle and the charging station, an EV can be fully recharged in less than an hour too. Charging for EVs with swappable batteries can be done at home. This usually takes longer than the ones with fixed batteries.
Yes. Most of the EV makers offer home charging solutions along with their electric vehicles. Every electric vehicle comes with the charging cable. Some even offer converters to plug into various types of charging outlets. This can range between the most common 15 amp charging plugs to wallbox chargers with faster capacity.
Top speed of electric cars vary from model to model. It depends on the power its electric motors can generate. While some EVs are offered with a single electric motor, others offer electric cars with twin electric motors to offer more performance. The top speed of electric cars in India range between 81 kmph and 260 kmph.
EV is the abbreviated form for electric vehicles. It is attributed to vehicles which are powered by electric motors. These motors use electricity as power which they draw from a battery placed in the car. Electric vehicles are capable of being charged from an external source. EVs also include vehicles that can be powered by an electric motor that draws electricity from a battery and by an internal combustion engine. They are called plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
