Chinese EV maker NIO unveils EC6 - its first electric coupe SUV

China’s premium electric vehicle maker NIO has unveiled its third major product in its lineup - EC6 SUV. This is also the company’s first electric coupe SUV.

The EV was unveiled on the occasion of NIO Day held in Shenzen last week. It is estimated that NIO will announce the prices and specs of EC6 in July 2020 and begin the delivery in September.


With the coupe body design, the EC6 features a 2.1m2 all-glass roof. The EC6 Performance Version is equipped with a 160kW PM motor and a 240kW induction motor, and goes from standstill to 100km/h in just 4.7 seconds.

With the 100kWh liquid-cooled thermostatic battery pack, the EC6 Performance Version boasts an NEDC range of up to 615km.

The carmaker has been facing a tough time amid unprecedented slump in Chinese auto sales. Tesla has recently entered the Chinese market posing even greater challenge for the Chinese startup EV maker.

The Chinese carmaker’s finances remain critically strained even though the company has cut jobs and started to scale back marketing expenditures.

NIO has accumulated a deficit of almost $6 billion since its founding in 2014, spending extensively on marketing and product development for a foothold in the burgeoning market.
