Top 10 cars sold in India in May: Hyundai Creta leads the pack dominated by SUVs
In a normal world, or even with a pandemic looming large, it was always difficult to imagine a list of top 10 cars sold in India that did not have a Maruti car on top. But May has been that kind of month, which not only saw shadows of a forgettable April last year, but also witnessed something that the industry never saw in the recent past. Hyundai led the list of carmakers in India with most units sold last month. The icing on the cake was Hyundai Creta SUV's crowning as the best-seller, even though in a pandemic-hit market with lockdown-like restrictions in several parts of the country.
Here is a quick look at the list of top 10 cars sold in India in May, a list that has a lot of surprise names.
Hyundai Creta SUV has jumped five spots to top the list in May as it continues to dominate the segment in India. Even though auto sales were hit massively across segments, SUVs have done fairly well last month. Crowning of Creta as India's best-seller in May bears testimony to that. Hyundai sold 7,527 units of Creta SUV against 12,463 units it sold in April.
Maruti Swift hatchback, which was dethroned by WagonR in April from the number one spot, retained its place at number two on the list. Maruti sold 7,005 units of Swift as compared to 18,316 units it sold in April. Maruti Swift has been the best-seller for the Indian car manufacturer for quite some time now.
Kia Sonet is the surprise entrant in the list of top 10 cars sold last month. The sub-compact SUV fro Kia India has made it straight to number three spot on the list by selling 6,627 units in May. In April, Kia had sold 7,724 units of Sonet. Despite Covid-19 challenges, Kia managed to keep the slump in sales under control with a drop of about 14 per cent in monthly sales.
Tata Nexon is another surprise entry in the pack of best-sellers in India. The sub-compact SUV has performed much better than most others in this list considering the minimal drop in sales figures compared to April this year. Last month, Tata Motors sold 6,439 Nexon SUVs against 6,938 units in the previous month. The drop in sales is merely 7 per cent, something most other carmakers would have been extremely happy with.

Maruti Dzire continues to hold the number five position in the list of top 10 selling cars. Maruti sold 5,819 units of Dzire, down from 14,073 units it sold in the previous month.
Hyundai Venue has replaced Creta SUV as the new number six in the list. The Venue had emerged as the best-selling sub-compact SUV in April. However, it has lost out to Nexon and Sonet in May. Hyundai sold 4,840 units of Venue last month, compared to 11,245 units sold in April.
Maruti Baleno, which once used to figure among top three selling cars in the country, has dropped down the list to number seven in May. Maruti sold 4,803 units of Baleno last month, the least in a very long time barring April last year when no carmaker could sell a single unit. In April this year, Maruti had sold 16,384 units of Baleno.
Kia Seltos SUV, the key rival to last month's best-seller Creta, features at number eight in the list. The SUV initially had put up a strong challenge to the Hyundai five-seater SUV, but gradually lost momentum by a bit. Kia sold 4,277 units of Seltos last month, compared to 8,086 units in April.
Hyundai i10 Grand Nios has dropped back two places in the list to number nine in May. Hyundai sold 3,804 i10 Grand Nios hatchbacks in May, compared to 11,540 units in April.
Th last name on the list is Mahindra Bolero, which recorded 3,517 sales unit in May. The SUV remains one of Mahindra's most popular offerings in India. Bolero is also set for a facelift soon.
