At a time when demand for SUVs has shown no signs of slowing, other segments have had to play catch up, especially in the Indian automotive sector. The compact sedan segment, however, has fared as well as it possibly could have under the overall gloom in the sector with Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Honda Amaze dominating here. Hyundai now plans to regain lost ground and is all set to launch Aura in the market on Tuesday (January 21).

The Aura is targeted at a premium customer base and sibling Xcent will be positioned as a fleet proposition by Hyundai. Little wonder then that the Aura promises uniquely appealing exteriors and is likely to get a mile-long list of features. At its heart would be 1.2-litre petrol and diesel engine options as well as a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol - all three obviously compliant with BS 6 emission norms. Inside, the car will get an eight-inch infotainment system, 5.3-inch LCD driver's display, rear AC vents, wireless phone charging etc.

Here is how Aura will stand up against its two most capable rivals, in terms of dimensions.

The Aura is not expected to be the most spacious car to sit in, at least not if going completely by the numerical figures above. Yet, Hyundai could push the sub-four meter sedan as a premium proposition for those looking for refinement and features galore. The diesel engine option is a bit of a gamble as well but the decision to offer a 1.0-litre turbo petrol could well be the trump card with the Koreans.
