The Indian EV startup that launched the <a href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-bikes/ultraviolette/tesseract" target="_blank">Tesseract</a> electric scooter and the <a href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-bikes/ultraviolette/shockwave" target="_blank">Shockwave</a> electric dual-purpose motorcycle earlier this year is now working on a range of upcoming two-wheelers across different segments.</p>

<p>Interestingly, while most of the auto companies, including both startups and legacy players, start their journey with affordable products first and bring premium ones at a later stage, Ultraviolette took a different approach. It went for a top-down product strategy as compared to the conventional growth plan. Besides that, Ultraviolette has been investing considerably longer time in research and development, which is resulting in a longer time to bring a final product to the market, but better validated two-wheelers, as compared to many other key players in this domain.</p>

<p>HT Auto had an interaction with Narayan Subramaniam, CEO and co-founder of Ultaviolette Automotive, to learn about the company's product strategy and more.</p>

<h2>HT Auto: What motivated Ultraviolette to adopt a top-down strategy rather than a more conventional growth model that others have been taking for so long?</h2><p><strong>Narayan Subramaniam:</strong> Our journey began with a bold vision: to create a long-lasting, sustainable brand that redefines mobility. With this vision, we set out to develop a performance-oriented motorcycle first, but it also brought significant challenges across key components. Instead of bypassing these obstacles, we embraced them, dedicating the initial seven years just to perfecting the very essence of our product—its drivetrain, battery, technology, motor, and overall system efficiency. By tackling these foundational challenges head-on, we unlocked the potential for vertical integration and modular adaptability, paving the way for future downstream innovations. <p>Tyres of any car are the most important components that maintain contact between the vehicle and the road surface. Many vehicle owners often take their vehicles to inflate tyres at local shops, fuel stations, etc. However, think of a situation where you are driving with low air pressure in the tyres and there is no place to inflate the tyres. This is the key reason why portable tyre inflators are finding an increasing footprint in the automotive accessory market.</p>

<p>A wide range of compact and portable tyre inflators are available in the market, both online and offline. With the increasing number of cars in the market, takers of these accessories are also growing fast. Recently, we got our hands on the Portronics Vayu 7.0 tyre inflator and here is our review of it.</p>

<h2>Portronics Vayu 7.0 tyre inflator: Design and build</h2><p>The Portronics Vayu 7.0 tyre inflator comes with a sturdy build. The black coloured compact, and chunky design. In terms of design, the portable tyre inflator looks like a portable power bank. The Portronics Vayu 7.0 tyre inflator gets a digital display showing the vehicle mode, air pressure level, charge level, etc. The device also has a Type A USB charging socket, a Type C USB charging port, and an LED flashlight.</p>

<p>The Portronics Vayu 7.0 tyre inflator comes with soft push buttons, which allow the user to toggle between the vehicle modes, which are - car, motorcycle, bicycle, sports balls and custom. It gets two 2000 mAh battery packs inside the device, which can be recharged using the USB charging cable that comes along with the device. The device comes with spare nozzles that can be used if needed.</p>

<h2>Portronics Vayu 7.0 tyre inflator: Performance</h2><p>The Portronics Vayu 7.0 tyre inflator comes with four different inflation modes. The modes come with presets and an auto shut-off function. In Car mode, the pre-set air pressure is 36 PSI, which is 32 PSI for Motorcycle mode. The Bicycle mode comes with a 0-70 PSI preset, while the Sports ball comes with an 8 PSI preset. There is a custom mode as well that allows the user to set the air pressure level between 0-150 PSI.</p>

<p>The Portronics Vayu 7.0 tyre inflator claims to come with an air flow of 4-5 PSI per minute. We tried to inflate the car tyre to 36 PSI. To reach 36 PSI from 22 PSI, it took the Portronics Vayu 7.0 tyre inflator about six minutes, though. However, we didn't try the other modes. Also, we tested the LED flashlight's performance in a totally dark environment, and it performed pretty well, illuminating the engine bay area of the car.</p>

<h2>Portronics Vayu 7.0 tyre inflator: Verdict</h2><p>The Portronics Vayu 7.0 tyre inflator is an essential device promising the functionality of a compact and portable air inflator, which doesn't require being plugged into the vehicle's power socket, like many other portable tyre inflators. In case of an emergency at a location where a tyre inflator is not available, and you can spare some time, this can act as a lifesaver. At a sticker price of  <span class='webrupee'>₹</span>1,849, the device is pretty handy.</p>

Defender prices to drop by 50%? How India-UK FTA will affect prices

<p>The recently concluded India-UK Free-Trade Agreement (FTA) will have a major impact on the economies of both nations, but prices for the Range Rover and <a href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-cars/landrover/defender" target="_blank">Defender</a> models won’t see a major drop as the Internet will have you <a href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-bikes/benlingindia/believe" target="_blank">believe</a>. The India-UK FTA is expected to bring the taxation down from over 100 per cent to just 10 per cent. However, JLR’s global best seller are already in made in India and that means, there is likely going to be little change in prices. Here’s how.</p>

<p>JLR commenced local assembly of the Range Rover LWB and <a href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-cars/landrover/rangeroversport" target="_blank">Range Rover Sport</a> last year, while it has been assembling the Discovery, <a href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-cars/landrover/discoverysport" target="_blank">Discovery Sport</a>, <a href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-cars/landrover/rangeroverevoque" target="_blank">Range Rover Evoque</a> and Velar in India for a while now. With the models already being assembled here, it will see no change in prices for the range.</p>

<p>On the other, the Defender, JLR’s top-selling model in India will not see a change in pricing, despite bring a full import. The Defender is made at the brand’s Nitra manufacturing plant in Slovakia, and not in the UK. Under the India-UK FTA, products covered under exemption are those built in either countries. Given the Defender’s Slovakian origins, the model will see no impact on the pricing.</p>

<p>That being said, rumours are rife that the Defender is next to begin local assembly in the country. JLR’s <a href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-bikes/indian/chief" target="_blank">Chief</a> Financial Officer, Richard Molyneux, confirmed recently during an earnings call that local assembly for the Defender in India is in the works. However, the company is yet to officially announce plans or timelines for the same. We have reached out to JLR for a statement on the same, and will update this piece as and when the company responds.</p>

<p>That being said, the Defender’s local assembly won’t bring down prices by 50 per cent either. It will, however, get more affordable by about 20 per cent, similar to how Range Rover prices dropped last year. (Please interlink RR price drop story here)</p>

<p>The Defender is currently priced between  <span class='webrupee'>₹</span>1.05 crore and  <span class='webrupee'>₹</span>2.79 crore (ex-showroom) and is available in three body styles - 90 (3-door), 110 (5-door), and 130 (5-door extra long). Should the local assembly begin, expect starting prices to hover around the  <span class='webrupee'>₹</span>85 lakh mark. But a timeline for the local assembly is yet to be ascertained.</p>

<p>For JLR and buyers, the local assembly strategy works out better. The model is more readily available since the dependence on global allocations is lesser. Moreover, the fluctuating foreign exchange has a lesser impact on overall prices. The move also opens room for more opportunities to vendors, suppliers, and labour in the country, making it a more fruitful strategy in the long term.</p>

<p>JLR is already reaping benefits of this strategy with the larger Range Rovers. The company registered a 40 per cent year-on-year hike in sales in FY2025, retailing 6,183 units, its highest-ever in India. Defender sales witnessed a spike by 90 per cent, while the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport grew by 72 per cent and 42 per cent, respectively. The record sales helped JLR move up to the third spot in the Indian luxury sales market, behind <a href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-cars/mercedesbenz" target="_blank">Mercedes-Benz</a> and BMW, pushing <a href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-cars/audi" target="_blank">Audi</a> to fourth.</p>

<p>The video raking IP thousands of views online shows the user filming the roof-mounted lidar system of the Volvo EX90 electric SUV. Imediately after pointing the smartphone's camera at the lidar system of the EX90, the equipment destroys the expensive smartphone camera's sensor. As the image closes in on the lidar’s beam, which pulses to measure distances, it begins to leave a trail of lights on the phone's screen, which are the result of the laser burning some of the individual pixels on the phone camera's sensor.</p>

<h2>Is lidar safe for human eyes?</h2><p>The latest video has raised concerns about the lidar's impact on human body. According to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the intensity of lidar beams is tightly regulated and lidar systems on vehicles meet Class One standards, which means they are safe for human eyes. This comes as a relief for many as there is no need to panic. The lidar system of the Volvo EX90 or any other vehicle that comes equipped with this technology will not damage your eye. However, remember that it can wreck havoc on your pricey phone's camera.</p>

<h2>Volvo EX90: When will it launch in India?</h2><p>Volvo Cars started production of the EX90 electric SUV in 2024 and deliveries of the EV have started last year in some international markets. The luxury electric SUV is slated to launch in India in 2025.</p>

The electric SUV, which is available in two different battery pack choices and six different trim options, have been witnessing high demand amid the growing popularity of electric cars in the country.</p>

<p><a href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-cars/hyundai" target="_blank">Hyundai</a> has revealed that it is getting maximum demand for the Creta Electric's higher-spec Excellence LR variant that is powered by a 51.4 kWh battery pack. Interestingly, the South Korean automaker is not the only car manufacturer in India in terms of seeing top-end demand for its EVs, with both <a href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-cars/tata" target="_blank">Tata Motors</a> and <a href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-bikes/mahindra" target="_blank">Mahindra</a> too echoing similar sentiments in terms of recording demand for their respective electric cars.</p>

<p>The fully loaded version of the Excellence LR trim of the <a href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-cars/hyundai/creta-ev" target="_blank">Hyundai Creta Electric</a>, like its internal combustion engine-powered sibling, has a plethora of features onboard. Some of these key features include the dual digital screens comprising a touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital instrument cluster, Level 2 ADAS suite, powered driver’s seat with ventilation, V2L (vehicle-to-load), connected car technology, Bose sound system, and a panoramic sunroof, among others.</p>

Buoyed by the positive consumer response for this electric SUV, Hyundai is now working on the Carens Clavis EV, which will come as an EV version of the recently launched <a href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-cars/kia/clavis" target="_blank">Carens Clavis</a>. The Hyundai Carens Clavis EV is scheduled to launch in India later this year.</p>

<h2>Hyundai Creta Electric: What the Excellence LR trim offers</h2><p>At the exterior, the Excellence LR trim of the Hyundai Creta Electric gets features such as quad beam LED headlamps, horizon LED positioning lamp and DRLs, LED high mounted stop lamp, LED tail lamps, rear horizon LED lamp, LED turn signal with sequential function, LED turn indicators on ORVMs, charging port with multi-colour surround light and the state-of-charge (SOC) indicator. It runs on 17-inch aero alloy wheels with low rolling resistance tyres.</p>

<p>Inside the cabin, it gets features such as a voice-enabled smart panoramic sunroof, dual zone automatic temperature control with touch function, front row ventilated seats, electric parking brake with auto hold, smartphone wireless charger, multiple drive modes, paddle shifters for adjustable regenerative braking, ADAS-linked regenerative braking system, cruise control, smart key with push button start, remote start with smart key, etc. It also gets a front armrest with cooled storage, open console storage with lamp, rear centre armrest with cup holders, electric tailgate release, rear AC vents, etc.</p>

<p>Other features include a 10.25-inch fully digital multi-display digital cluster, a 10.25-inch HD audio video navigation system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, a Bose premium sound eight-speaker system, voice recognition, Hyundai Bluelink, in-car payment, Over-the-Air (OTA) updates for map and infotainment, Home-to-Car (H2C) with Alexa, etc.</p>

<p>On the safety front, it gets front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD, Electronic stability control (ESC), Vehicle stability management (VSM), Hill-start assist control (HAC), Hill descent control (HDC), Tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), front and rear disc brakes, seat belt pretensioners, child seat anchor (ISOFIX), Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), impact sensing auto door unlock, speed sensing auto door lock, inside door handle override, engine immobilizer, burglar alarm, central locking, etc.</p>
