NEW DELHI :

Just months after the new Honda City was launched in the Thai market - back in November of 2019, the company may be planning to bring in the Honda City 2020 to Indian shores. A recent media invite from the company for a schedule block in March has given impetus to reports that it could well be for the new Honda City which has been eagerly awaited here and could give stimulus to the otherwise stuttering sedan segment.

Honda City was unveiled in Thailand with striking design changes on the outside, a more premium finish inside and with a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine option which produces 122 hp and torque of 173 Nm. A 1.5-litre petrol engine is also available while in India, Honda may also bring in the same 1.5-litre diesel engine that is found on the outgoing model. The company is already offering BS 6-compliant engine in petrol.

Fifth-generation Honda City in Thailand is also offered with a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine option.

In terms of dimensions, Honda City 2020 is 100 mm longer than the outgoing model and is also wider by 55 mm. What it gains in terms of length and breadth, the car loses in height and wheelbase. The former has come down by 28 mm while the other is down by 11mm.

The fifth-generation City is expected to pack in a whole lot of features as well with the Thai version getting an 8-inch touchscreen is complimented by vertical air vents while there are two USB slots and a 12V power socket. The brown and beige colour scheme may be carried forward.

City's possible launch in March could once again put the spotlight on C-Segment sedans which also features Ciaz from Maruti Suzuki and Verna from Hyundai. While the Ciaz has dominated the field of play for quite some time now, it - much like most other cars - has suffered from the slowdown in the Indian auto industry. Verna's tale is not much different although there are reports that even Hyundai is planning to bring in a face lift in the near future.
