Maruti Suzuki to recall 63,493 Ciaz, Ertiga, XL 6 petrol smart hybrids

Maruti Suzuki on Friday announced that it will recall as many as 63,493 Ciaz, Ertiga and XL 6 units for possible faults in their Motor Generator Units (MGU).

The recall will be for these cars manufactured between January 1 and November 21 of 2019. "The Company will inspect 63,493 vehicles of petrol SHVS of Ciaz, Ertiga and XL6 for a possible issue with the Motor Generator Unit (MGU). A possible defect may have occurred in the MGU during manufacturing by an overseas global part supplier," Maruti Suzuki informed in a statement. "Recall campaigns are undertaken globally to rectify faults that may be potential safety defects."

Maruti Suzuki says that the recalled vehicles would be thoroughly checked and would be released immediately. If a part needs to be replaced, it would be done so without any cost to the owner. "Maruti Suzuki dealers may make alternate mobility arrangements in such cases, if required," the statement read.

Maruti Suzuki is asking owners of vehicles which were manufactured in the above mentioned time period to contact company dealers. Owners can also visit the company's website, click on the 'Important Customer Info' tab and fill in the chassis number (MA3 followed by 14 digit alpha-numeric number) to check if their vehicle needs to be brought in.

Recalls are considered proactive measures from auto manufacturers to check and fix potential vehicles which have already been sold and are out on roads. Globally, several major automotive companies have issued recall orders in recent months to check possible faults of varying nature and with different impact potentials. These recalls almost always involve the faulty part(s) being replaced or repaired with no cost to the owner.
