Maruti Suzuki Alto becomes India's only car to breach 38 lakh sales frontier
- First launched in India in 2000, the Alto has been the undisputed champion in the entry-level segment, despite the presence of some very worthy rivals.
- Alto hit 10 lakh in sales in eight years, next 10 lakh in four years and next 10 lakh in two years.
To call it the most popular car in India may be an understatement considering that 38 lakh Alto units have been sold by Maruti Suzuki in India since the car was first launched here back in 2000.
Alto has been on the lightening-quick sales path over the past several years and has been leading the way across all segments. It is little wonder then that it is now India's only car to rake up 38 lakh units in sales. This, quite obviously, has also helped Alto become India's best-selling car over 15 years. "Alto has been the preferred choice for entry car buyers due to several factors like its compact design, easy maneuverability, high fuel efficiency, updated safety features etc, while maintaining the affordability," said Shashank Srivastava, Executive Director (Marketing & Sales), Maruti Suzuki India. "The 38 lakh strong Alto family is a testament to our commitment of providing the best-in-class products."
What has helped Alto not just stay relevant but lead the charts has been Maruti Suzuki's decisions to regularly upgrade the design and technology of and in the car. It also does not cut corners when it comes to safety and has driver-side air bags as standard while is the only car in its segment to offer passenger airbag as an option from base variant onwards.

The Alto also benefits from a high fuel efficiency - 22.05 kmpl, a robust after-sales network and good resale value. It recently became India's first BS 6-compliant entry-level car which points to the fact that this car here is all set to enter the new decade with poise and continue bringing in the numbers.
In India, the Alto competes with Renault Kwid, Hyundai Santro and Datsun redi-Go, among others.
