Is Ford Territory SUV coming to India? New trademark suggests so

  • Ford Territory is already on sale in a few global markets and is offered only with an FWD powertrain.
Ford might use the Territory nameplate for the SUVs that they have already filed design patents for.

Ford might not have confirmed its plans for the Indian market. But we can agree that there are a lot of talks and movements happening around the manufacturer. They are filing several design and nameplate trademarks. Recently, the manufacturer filed for another nameplate trademark. It is for ‘Territory’, a mid-size SUV that is already on sale in the global market. It is important to note that filing a trademark does not mean that the brand will be launching the SUV. Sometimes, companies just file trademarks just for the sake of it.

The Ford Territory is considered to be a crossover in the global market whereas in India, it will belong to the mid-size SUV segment. So, if it ever launches in India then it will be competing against MG Hector, Tata Harrier, Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta and Mahindra XUV700.

Under the hood, the Territory gets a 1.8-litre EcoBoost petrol engine. It puts out 189 bhp of max power and a peak torque output of 320 Nm. It comes mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission only. Because the SUV is primarily made to do city and highway duties, it is being offered only with a front-wheel drive drivetrain. There are four driving modes on offer and Ford claims a fuel efficiency of 15.9 kmpl.

Apart from the Territory, Ford has filed a nameplate trademark for the Mustang Mach-E which is the brand's electric crossover in the global market. When Ford left the Indian market, it was being expected that they would just sell electric vehicles in India but that didn't happen. Apart from the Mach-E, Ford has filed design patents for what seems like two SUVs. Interestingly, the design patent is very similar to the SUV codenamed W605 that was leaked a few years ago, before Ford exited the Indian market. As of now, there are no details on the powertrain options of the upcoming SUVs. There could be a petrol and a diesel engine on offer.
