Nissan is testing a self-cleaning car

The Japanese carmaker is putting a dirt-repelling nano-paint technology through its paces that could one day consign carwashes and valet services to the history books.

As well as dirt, the pint technology can stop water, mud and oil from clinging to a car's bodywork.

It consists of a super-hydrophobic and oleophobic coating that essentially creates a layer of air between the car's exterior surface and the atmosphere.

Nissan is currently examining the paint's true value with a view to offering it as an optional or after-market extra on its vehicles.

As the video shows, that means finishing one half of a Nissan Note with the paint and allowing engineers at the company's Technical Centre, Europe to put it through its paces in a number of real-world conditions to judge how effective it will be to its customers.

And so far, at least, the coating, which is being marketed and sold by UltraTech International Inc as Ultra-Ever Dry, has performed well when put up against rainfall, spray and standing water.
