Find Car Insurance Details by Registration Number Online

In the event of an accident or theft, you will need this number to register an FIR.

A car registration number is assigned to a four-wheeler to distinguish it from other vehicles of identical or different brands and models. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) assigns this number. The number also helps identify the vehicle owner because the details of vehicle owners are fed into the RTO's database when you apply for the registration number.

According to the rules, when you buy a car, you must register it with your city’s RTO within 30 days. The number you get must be printed on the high-security number plate and then affixed to the front and back of the vehicle.

Car Registration Number Example

Let’s break down what a typical vehicle registration number looks like through an example: DL01AB1234.

  • DL: The first two letters represent the state or Union Territory where the vehicle is registered. In the above example, ‘DL’ stands for Delhi.
  • 01: The third and fourth letters indicate the specific RTO within the state.
  • AB: The RTO assigns the fifth and sixth letters in a sequence, which helps to pinpoint the registration details further.
  • 1234: The last four letters can be between 1 and 9999. The vehicle owner can choose this number, often called a VIP number, through an auction for a special fee.

Role of Car Registration Number

  • The insurer will first ask for your car registration number when purchasing car insurance. It validates that the policy applies to a specific four-wheeler.
  • You will need this number when you renew your policy. As soon as you enter your vehicle registration number, the details of your existing plan will appear on the screen. From there, you may customise the coverage by adding or removing riders.
  • During the claim procedure, you have to provide your registration number, and the insurer may also request that you produce your registration certificate for claim settlement.
  • In the event of an accident or theft, you will need this number to register an FIR.
  • Driving a car in India without a registration number on the plate might result in a hefty penalty. Traffic police may also seize your vehicle.
