Tata Motors is all set to launch the 2013 Tata Nano tomorrow. However, unlike the 2012 Nano, which was a considerable step up from its predecessor, the 2013 version comes only with minor cosmetic changes and no significant upgrades.

As can be seen from these spy photos taken just ahead of the launch, the 2013 Nano gets new bumpers and strips of chrome both on the front and rear in what is a feeble attempt to embellish the exterior, which has remained largely unchanged. The rear bumper does get bigger air vents though for better cooling of the engine.

Updated interiors now come with integrated stereo with bluetooth.

The talking point of the interior is the addition of a glove box, the only useful addition in the cabin, which again is largely the same except for some colour, trim and fabric changes. The top-end model however will come with an integrated music system (with both speakers placed on the dashboard) with CD, MP3, Aux-in, USB and Bluetooth capabilities. These additions may just be what the Nano needs to liven up the cabin and appeal to more customers.

Tata engineers have focussed on tweaking the quality and improving reliability levels. The clutch, a weak point of the Nano, has been beefed up, as have the electricals and a few mechanical bits. The 623cc, twin-cylinder engine, which is now a proven unit, is carried over from the 2012 model and continues to deliver acceptable performance and impressive fuel economy.

2013 Nano gets a chrome strip and additional vents on the rear bumper.

The 2013 Nano is seen as a stop-gap for the long overdue and much awaited variants with power steering and CNG, both of which are expected by the end of the year. The power steering version could further improve the fortunes of the Nano though. A lighter steering would appeal to women drivers, many of whom have thus far shied away from the Nano because of the undue amount of effort required to park this tiny car.

The 2013 Nano is expected to come with a marginal increase in price.
