Dzire speeds past Alto, is best-selling car in May

For the first time ever, a sedan has emerged as the bestselling car in a month in India. Maruti's entry-level sedan Dzire has outsold its sibling Alto, the long time bestseller, with sales of 17,265 units compared to the latter's 16,411 units sold in May.
This is only the second time in over seven years that Alto has been displaced from the top — and the last time it was another Maruti product, the Swift, that topped in April last year.

"In the last 6-7 years, over 2 million super hatchbacks have been sold in India. So the premise for the Dzire was on the assumption that when these customers would want to upgrade in 3-4 years time, they will want a sedan with similar characteristics," said Mayank Pareek, chief operating officer, marketing and sales, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.

"The compact Dzire also came in at the right time for us and has really enhanced the car's value proposition. No doubt everybody is now gunning for that segment."
The recently launched Honda Amaze, the Dzire's direct competitor, has outsold its compact sibling Brio to enter the top 10 with sales of 6,036 units in May.
