Volvo XC90 R-Design: the fast and the fortified

Volvo has revealed the first details of its planned sports-focused SUV, the XC90 R-Design.
The standard XC90 is one of the most eagerly awaited car launches of 2014. Volvo's new flagship seven-seat SUV offers a completely new level of safety for the driver, occupants and other road users; while in terms of internal quality, fixtures and fittings, it has taken a giant leap towards Range Rover.

But now the company has its sights fixed on Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5 drivers and has confirmed that it is planning to offer an equally luxurious but altogether sportier version too.
'R-Design is created for people with a passion for things that add spice to life,' said Alain Visser, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Sales and Customer Service of Volvo Car Group. 'It appeals to customers that love active driving and a personal, expressive design. Every single R-Design detail is designed to contribute to the individualistic and refined expression these customers desire.'
In the case of the XC90 that will mean an accentuated front grille, 20-inch alloy wheels, integrated rear exhausts on the outside and special Nubuck and perforated leather on the inside, plus up to 400hp under the hood.
However, this increased performance and tweaked styling won't mean that the car lacks any of the standard model's features. Indeed, when it launches next year, the Design-R will be offered as a more performance-focused flagship, complete with cutting-edge safety technology and driver aids.
