Volkswagen (VW) Passenger Cars India plans to launch a sedan, or a car with a boot, based on its Polo platform in India. The company is also studying the possibility of setting up dedicated assembly lines for its Passat, Jetta and Touareg models.
"Passat, Jetta and Touareg would be obvious candidates for a dedicated assembly lines whenever numbers justify an assembly line," said Neeraj Garg, member of the board and director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India.
Passat and Jetta are sedans, while the Touareg is a large Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). The Touareg is currently sold only as a direct import, which means the buyer has to import it through VW India.
The company will launch the sedan based on the Polo platform in the second half 2010. While the engine specifications or the price has not been finalised, the company would be launching it as a 'mass-market car', Garg said.
The German automaker's focus on India is exemplified by the speed at which it plans to ramp up its dealerships in India.
The company, which has 25 outlets , plans to ramp up its dealerships to 40 by the end of this year. These would include Nashik, Kolhapur and Solapur in Maharashtra, and Karnal in Haryana, said Sandeep Mandrekar, deputy general manager sales, VW.
