Smart has presented the latest iterations of its fortwo and forfour city cars, which will go on display at the Paris Motor Show in October. Based on the same technical platform as the new Renault Twingo, the new city cars stand out for their unprecedented range of features and equipment.

From the previous fortwo, the only details Smart has carried over are the length (2.69m) and the price range. The forfour, meanwhile, has all the same characteristics as the fortwo, but with an additional door, a longer safety cell and a roofline that slants towards the back for a coupe-like style.

A choice of two three-cylinder engines (71hp and 90hp) will be offered with the new smart models, both with the automatic Stop/Start system, and an additional entry-level fuel engine with 60hp will be added to the range in 2015. The future Smart fortwo consumes 4.1l of fuel per 100km on average, resulting in CO2 emissions of 93g/km. The Smart forfour is almost just as efficient, with average fuel consumption of 4.2l/100km and CO2 emissions of 97g/km.

Even with the basic version ('pure'), both of the new minicars come with an expanded range of features for security and comfort, including LED daytime running lights, remote-controlled central locks, open door warnings, an ignition interlock device, cruise control, interior and exterior temperature display with ice hazard alerts and an ISOFIX system for attaching a child's seat to the passenger seat in the fortwo and the rear seats in the forfour.

In addition, the new Smart models are equipped with advanced driving assistance technologies previously found only on higher-end models, including a stabilization system to diminish the effects of lateral winds, anti-collision radar and lane departure warnings. The fortwo and forfour are available with one of three interior trim packages: passion, prime or proxy. Among the specific features available on higher-spec versions are a leather multi-function steering wheel, an instrument cluster with a 3.5-inch color screen and heated seats.

Finally, Smart boasts that its new models offer the smallest turning circles of any consumer car on the market, allowing them to slide into even the tiniest parking spaces, make tight U turns and glide through traffic with ease.
