Ford launches diesel version of Fusion

Priced at Rs 6,59,000 ($16,300), the car is being offered in only one variant and is available in six colours.

Ford India on Tuesday launched the diesel version of its premium hatchback Fusion in an attempt to build a robust diesel portfolio.

'Strengthening our diesel platform is a key strategy for us and we are hopeful that with the launch of the diesel variant of Fusion we will be able to attract more customers,' said Arvind Matthew, president of Ford India, while unveiling the car here.

The car is being offered in only one variant and is priced at 659,000 ($16,300). It will be available in six colours - paprika red, moon dust silver, diamond white, panther black, brush steel and mystic wine.

'With the prices of petrol going up, diesel is always a viable option. Fusion diesel is a practical mix of international design, spacious and comfortable interiors with Ford's world renowned Duratorq TDCi diesel engine,' said Matthew.

The diesel version of Fusion is packed with a 1.4 litre Duratorq TDCi (turbo diesel common rail injection) engine. The engine is made of aluminium alloy, which makes it lighter.

The TDCi engine enables the car to produce 68PS of power @4000 rotation per minute (rpm) and an impressive 160 Newton meter torque @2000 rpm.

'The increasing preference for Ford's TDCi badge bears testament to the superior preference of our diesel products.'

Asked about Ford's poor market share in the country, Matthew said: 'I am not chasing the numbers. For us the objective is to build brands.

'I want to have the best brand recognition in the country. The Indian automobile market is growing rapidly and we will continue to be a part of it.'

On the entry-level small car race in the country, Matthew said Ford has looked at all the segments in the country because it is growing rapidly.

Prompted by Tata Motors' plans to launch the world's cheapest car, at just 100,000 ($,2500) rupees next year, Renault/Nissan and Mahindra are also mulling such a model.

Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co., Fiat and Volkswagen AG are also looking to build low-cost cars to compete in fast-growth emerging markets from India and China to Russia.

'There is a huge potential for small cars and other segments as well. I am really excited to see such a car priced at the range of $3,000 even if it rolls out. We don't have a car in that price range and I am sure that others don't have it either. So it would be exciting to see such a car,' said Matthew.
