While keeping its plan open for a low cost car to compete with Maruti Alto, Nissan on Wednesday unveiled its midsize sedan, Sunny — the second model to be produced in its Chennai plant after its compact car Micra.

Kiminobu Tokuyama, MD & CEO, Nissan Motor India said the company will begin production of the Sunny by August-end, with an October launch. The price-range was not revealed.

The 10th generation Sunny, originally launched in 1966, will come with a 1.5-litre petrol engine and is likely to be pitched against Toyota Etios, VW Vento, Hyundai Verna, Swift Dzire, Ford Fiesta and Honda City.

About its small car project, Tokuyama said, "We are seriously studying it". He said assembly of high-end sedan Teana is also on at the Chennai plant.

Nissan will launch its multi purpose vehicle, pitted against Toyota's Innova, next year.

Nissan has sold 18,000 units of Micra in India since its launch in July 2010. It exported 90,000 units to Europe, Africa and West Asia. "We sold 13,000 cars in the last fiscal. Our target is to triple sales this fiscal," he said.
