In its bid to launch a revival in the Indian market, Italian car maker Fiat on Tuesday launched the next generation of its compact car Punto with an aggressive introductory price of 4.55-7.19 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Punto Evo, available in both petrol and diesel engines, the new Punto will take on Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai i20, Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Liva.

Fiat was one of the first foreign car manufacturers to enter India but has found it tough to tackle competition in the last two decades.

"It has been a fresh start for us after breaking away with Tata," said Nagesh Basavanhalli, president and managing director, Fiat Group Automobiles India. "We have taken a lot of measures to undo the damage and it will take some more time. With the Punto Evo we are trying to make sure our products remain contemporary at the marketplace. Without them, we will not get anywhere."
