Upcoming motorcycles that will launch in India soon: Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 to Yamaha R3 and MT-03

2023 will soon be over and it was a pretty great year for motorcycle enthusiasts. We got a lot of motorcycles that people have been waiting for a long time. There is the Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650, Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X and a new generation of KTM Dukes. However, the year has not ended yet and there are a few motorcycles that we will be seeing soon in the Indian market. Here are four new motorcycles that will be launching soon in India.

The Himalayan 450 might be the motorcycle which has created the most hype this year. Royal Enfield will launch the Himalayan 450 on 24th November at Motoverse. The new Himalayan shares nothing with the Himalayan 411 which the 450 replaces in the lineup.The Himalayan 450 features an all-new liquid-cooled engine which has been named Sherpa 450. It produces 39.5 bhp at 8,000 rpm and 40 Nm at 5,500 rpm. It is mated to a 6-speed gearbox with slip and assist clutch.

Yamaha has finally decided to bring its big bikes to the Indian market. The first two motorcycles to land on our Indian shores are the R3 and MT-03. Both motorcycles will come through the CBU route so they will not be very aggressively priced. The R3 is a fully faired motorcycle whereas the MT-03 will be a naked streetfighter. Yamaha will be launching both motorcycles on 15th December.Both motorcycles are powered by a 321 cc, liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine that produces 41.4 bhp of peak power and 29.6 Nm of maximum torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox with a slip and assist clutch.

Aprilia India recently launched the RS457 in the global market. The motorcycle will be made-in-India and will go on sale in India by the end of December or early next year. The RS457 looks like a smaller version of the RS660. The motorcycle was also showcased at MotoGP 2023. Powering the motorcycle is a 457 cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC, parallel-twin engine tuned for 47 bhp and is mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

First Honda electric motorcycle India launch confirmed in 2024. To invest $3.4 billion in new e-motorcycle strategy

Honda Global has confirmed plans to launch an electric motorcycle equivalent to 110-125 cc commuters in India next year. The announcement was a part of <a class="manualbacklink" target="_blank" href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-bikes/honda">Honda</a> Motor Co’s new motorcycle electrification strategy, which will see the manufacturer invest $3.4 billion by 2030 on new products and development. The two-wheeler giant also revised its global sales target from 3.5 million to 4 million electric motorcycles by 2030.

The electric motorcycle will come with swappable batteries and will be built in India at the company’s existing manufacturing facility. It will be launched in India first, followed by other ASEAN markets, Japan and Europe. Honda announced electrification plans for India earlier this year promising two electric offerings equivalent to 110-125 cc offerings. While one e-scooter will get a fixed battery, the other model will come with swappable batteries.

Speaking during the presentation, Daiki Mihara, Executive Officer - Honda Motorcycle and Power Products Electrification Business Development Unit - Honda Motor Co., said, “Next year 2024, we will launch an electric motorcycle with swappable batteries starting in India and followed by ASEAN, Japan and Europe.”

Honda’s India operations will play a key role in the company’s motorcycle electrification strategy going forward. The company will use its existing facilities to build electric motorcycles from now till 2027 and plans to launch a dedicated plant beyond 2027 for electric motorcycles that will also manufacture important parts in-house to reduce cost. The new plants will have a production capacity of about one million units per year, per plant with an investment of 50 billion yen (approx. ₹2,800 crore) for each new facility.

Mihara further said that the two-wheeler maker will have a dedicated electric motorcycle plant in India, which will be followed up with another e-motorcycle manufacturing facility in the ASEAN region. Honda aims to reduce the cost of finished electric motorcycles by 50 per cent through optimising batteries, adopting modular platforms, and optimising production and procurement. The new assembly lines for electric motorcycles will be 40 per cent shorter when compared to ICE vehicles.

Furthermore, it plans to make major adjustments to its supply chains in order to achieve its goal of selling four million e-motorcycles by 2030 while achieving a 10 per cent operating profit margin. Honda also plans to repurpose its Kumamoto plant in Japan to produce <a class="manualbacklink" target="_blank" href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/auto/electric-vehicles/honda-working-on-electric-motorcycles-to-compete-in-the-500-750-cc-segment-41682758503693.html">larger-capacity electric motorcycles equivalent to 600-700 cc offerings</a>.&nbsp;

Honda’s future strategy includes bringing 30 new electric motorcycles globally by the end of this decade. The upcoming offerings will pack new technologies including advanced connectivity, OTA updates, and modern data collection systems. The company is also working on improving battery technology and will use LFP battery cells going forward, alongside NMC lithium-ion batteries presently seen on its electric offerings.

Compressed Natural Gas, abbreviated as CNG, is one of the cleaner and popular gas-based automotive fuel options in the market. It is considered a significantly cheaper fuel alternative fuel compared to petrol and diesel, while CNG also offers a substantially lower cost of ownership to vehicle owners. AMT or automatic transmission make driving easier and more convenient for drivers, especially in highly congested bumper-to-bumper traffic conditions.Here are some truly technical reasons why the CNG cars don't come with AMT or automatic transmission, but manual gearbox only.

Ertiga CNG

A CNG powertrain lacks low-end torque and takes its own time to gain pace. This puts pressure on the engine block to deliver power at a particular instant. The AMT or automatic transmission-equipped cars come with detuned clutches as they are unable to withstand heavy torque and are prone to overheating. Hence, in the need of an instant power requirement, automatic transmission in a CNG car will lag in upshifting gears.

CNG means lack of low-end power

The automatic gearboxes are meant to stay coupled with driveshafts all the time until they are manually slotted into neutral. The lack of low-end power and torque may result in the automatic transmission in a CNG-propelled car struggling to crawl the vehicle when in drive. This can result in premature wear of the clutch, damaging the vehicle's critical component.

Possibility of premature clutch wear

While driving a CNG car equipped with an automatic transmission, the driver is bound to experience a considerable lag in acceleration as there will be low power output. A powerful engine can overcome this problem if paired with a better transmission setup but will command a higher cost of ownership. This will eventually not fetch the desired sales volume.

CNG cars come with higher upfront costs compared to their petrol-only counterparts. On the other hand, an automatic gearbox-equipped car comes priced considerably higher than its manual transmission-equipped counterpart. Hence, a car with a CNG propulsion system and automatic transmission will command substantially high upfront cost for the consumers.

<ul><li>CNG cars and automatic transmissions are among the hot favourite trends in the Indian market, but no car in the country's passenger vehicle market offers a CNG-automatic combination.</li></ul>

Honda Unicorn: Top highlights

The Unicorn has been on sale in the Indian market for quite sometime now. 

The motorcycle is known for reliability and low cost of maintainence.

The bike is available in four colours - Pearl Igneous Black, Imperial Red Metallic, Matte Axis Gray Metallic and a new Pearl Siren Blue colour scheme.

The 2023 Unicorn gets a three-pod instrument console with a tachometer, and speedometer, while the third pod houses the tell-tale lights and the fuel gauge. 

The engine produces 13.27 bhp and 14.58 Nm.

Braking performance comes from a 240 mm disc at the front and a 130 mm drum brake at the rear. The bike gets single-channel ABS as standard.
