Ruling like a regal monarch in a hotly contested two-wheeler segment in India requires a whole lot of poise and character. And the Activa from Honda has had ample doses of both. Since its launch about 20 years ago, the enormously popular scooter has been a firm favourite and in its latest version, is determined to keep the crown firmly in grasp.

The sixth-generation Activa, launched by Honda Motor Company recently, promises to give riders an even more comfortable ride, better fuel economy and, according to the company, poise and character to set a new benchmark in the two-wheeler market.

Not much has changed in the looks department of the new Activa but what has is noteworthy. It continues to have the same frame as its predecessors but what makes it stand out is a metal frame that has replaced plastic and fibre elements. The metal body adds to the strength, making the vehicle more durable and generously adding shine to the body. Cosmetic changes include a huge chrome garnish at the front while the LED headlights with DRL strips add to the visual appeal.

Honda has replaced the front wheel with a bigger 12-inch tyre to give the Activa a bolder road presence. The rear wheel continues to be the familiar 10-incher.

As always, the 110 cc engine is peppy and packed with power. Now, however, it gives the Activa better pickup and carries through the mid-range nicely. But the speed maxes out at 80 kmph, though the speedometer has markings till above 100 kmph.

The biggest change that Honda has introduced in the new Activa is that it now starts silently. The ACG motor gives the vehicle a jump-free start. The technology has been patented by Honda and comes as a nice addition to a vehicle used by scores of commuters in the country.

Another, and a much-needed, change brought in by Honda in the new Activa is that the fuel tank lid is not under the seat. It is outside, under a cover, which is opened by a switch provided near the start/stop mechanism at the front. The key mechanism used to start the vehicle now has an additional mode - seat/fuel. The rider has to move the key to that mode, press the switch - down for opening the seat and up for fuel lid - and the lock will pop open.

Honda thought about ditching the under seat fuel lid pretty late; its competitors have been providing an external fuel lid for years.

The under-seat storage space is more or less same, but it has a first-aid kit and a toolkit. But there is no charging point or glove box at the front - another area which the competitors have started paying attention to.

The Activa now comes with a BS 6 engine as per the strict pollution control norms announced by the government which will kick in from April 1 this year. This means that the scooter will now give a better mileage. The company claims the mileage to be somewhere between 55-60 kmpl.

An upgraded engine also means that you will have to shell out more to buy the new Activa. The ex-showroom price (in Delhi) of the new Honda scooter is around ₹64,000 which is about ₹7,000 costlier that it’s predecessor.

A higher price gives you better safety features and ride quality. The Activa now uses telescopic suspension, only seen in motorcycles up until now. The new suspension makes it easier to navigate the scooter on a bumpy road. The seat cushion is also softer to make those long hours of traffic jam comparatively less taxing. The length of the seat is also pretty good - two people won't complain about much even on slightly longer rides.

So, does the new Activa have what it takes to lead the pack?

The new Activa is a great product which offers a futuristic design, better mileage and most of the bells and whistles. But Honda has still not given it the utilities which are now common in the segment. And at the Auto Expo, some of the rivals showcased technological enhancements and safety features which make a two-wheeler almost comparable to a four-wheeler. It is disappointing to note that Honda did not think about adding these features in one of its best-selling products.

Activa is almost surely expected to continue as a strong performer but with rivals upping their game, the future may not be as generous to the undisputed leader of the Indian two-wheeler segment.

 Honda CB350RS Launch Date: 

 

Honda CB350RS is designed for hardcore bikers who love cruiser bikes with traditional style. Based on the H'Ness CB350, the bike was launched in India in February last year. A trivia is RS stands for “Road Sailing”.

The bike is offered in two variants: Monotone and Dual Tone. The Monotone variant costs Rs 203,179 (ex-showroom), while the Dual Tone comes at a price of Rs 203,808.

Amalgamating traditional and modern style, Honda CB350RS is designed around a half-duplex cradle frame. Round-shaped headlight and rear-view mirrors, under seat taillight, Y-shaped alloy wheels, and a tall-set handlebar are some of the key features of this bike. The bike comes with all-LED lights with an under seat tail lamp. Other notable features are digital odometer, semi-digital speedometer, analogue tachometer, GPS and navigation, fuel gauge, digital tripmeter, low fuel indicator, low oil indicator, killswitch and a clock. Radiant Red Metallic and Black with Pearl Sports Yellow are two available colours for the bike. 

 

 Honda CB350RS Performance: 

 

The engine is air-cooled and single-cylinder that generates 20.7 bhp of power at 5,500 rpm and 30 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm. It comes with a five-speed manual gearbox and is assisted a slipper clutch system. Telescopic forks will help in frontal suspension and twin rear springs are equipped for rear. For braking arrangement, there is a dual-channel ABS. The bike comfortably breaches the speed of 100 kmph and even at such high speed doesn’t trouble with any vibrations. The estimated top speed is 150 kmph. Honda CB350RS will offer a fuel efficiency of about 35-37 kmpl.

Despite the aggressive riding stance, Honda CB350RS still has a seating that is very much comfortable and doesn’t trouble much while driving in traffic. It has a 15-litre fuel storage capacity. It is a heavy beast with a kerb weight of 179 kg.

CB500X was first launched in India in March last year as compact twin adventurer bike. In February this year, Honda has updated this bike with some significant add-ons.

It is offered only in one variant. The original price during the launch more than year ago was Rs 6.87 lakh (ex-showroom). But, realising that the bike was significantly over-priced, the company decided to cut the price by a massive Rs 1.08 lakh. It is now offered at an ex-showroom price of Rs 5.79 lakh. 

 

 Honda CB500X Features: 

 

It's a mid-sized adventure bike, but its overall appearance doesn't justify its premium range. The bike is not for hardcore off-road drive, but for long-distance rides in urban set-up. The semi-fairing bike has a sharp design for the headlight and heighted windscreen. The front wheel is a new aluminium one that's 100 grams lighter than the one used earlier. It has a full-digital instrument cluster with features like odometer, tachometer, speedometer, low fuel indicator, and low oil indicator, among others. A noticeable feature in the bike is Emergency Stop Signal which detects sudden braking and automatically turns on the hazard lights. There is Honda Ignition Security System (HISS) too that automatically negates the starting of the bike via electronic control. 

 

 Honda CB500X Performance: 

 

The eight-valve, liquid-cooled, parallel twin-cylinder motor engine is capable in generating 47 bhp of power at 8,500 rpm and 43.2 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. The bike is equipped with slipper clutch system to assist its six-speed manual transmission. There is telescopic suspension in the front and the rear is handled by Honda ProLINK Monoshock. The braking system is dual-channel ABS. The estimated top speed justifies the segment with 185 kmph.

There is a circular headlamp, neutral handlebars, full-digital instrument cluster and full-LED illumination. Some highlighting features are: 1. Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), a traction control system which optimises torque generated at the rear wheel and lowers wheel-slip 2. Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) that switches on the front and rear hazard lights when sudden braking is applied. Digital odometer, tachometer and speedometer, mobile app connectivity, GPS & navigation, low fuel indicator, low oil indicator, and clock are some other features of the bike. The 649-cc liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine produces maximum power of 85.82 bhp at 12,000 rpm and peak torque of 57.5 Nm at 8,500 rpm. It has a six-speed manual transmission supported by multiplate wet clutch. While the front suspension is telescopic, the one at the rear is monoshock. For the braking, there is dual-channel ABS installed in the bike. The bike is equipped with floating dual discs at the front and a single disc at the back. The estimated top speed of the bike is 220 kmph. A fuel efficiency in the range of 20-25 kmpl can be expected with this bike.

Comprising disc brakes at both ends, Honda CBR 650R is equipped with anti-locking braking system. The frontal suspension is telescopic and the one at rear is monoshock. Assisted by a slipped clutch, the bike has a six-speed manual transmission. The estimated top speed is 230 Kmph and the ARAI-reported mileage is 23 kmpl.

The 1833-cc engine is liquid-cooled, four-stroke 24 valves and SOHC Flat-6. It produces a maximum power output of 93kW at 5,500 rpm and a torque of 170 Nm at 4,500 rpm. Honda’s Activa and Dio have over the years dominated the scooter segment in India, still Grazia, which was launched much later, has able to generate interest and attention. The 123.97-cc engine is fan-cooled, with four-stroke displacement. The bike has an automatic transmission. The maximum power the engine can generate is 6.07 Kw at 6,000 rpm with a peak torque of 10.3 Nm at 5,000 rpm. The suspension duties are performed by telescopic system in the front and three-step adjustable at the rear. Expect the mileage of around 45-50 kmpl with this automatic-geared scooter. The bike can reach an estimated speed of 90 kmph and doesn’t trouble with vibrations at higher speeds.

Sales in the retro classic motorcycle segment have soared in the Indian market lately and Honda is the latest entrant in the 350 cc classic motorcycling space that allures riders of all ages. Well, the Japanese auto major isn't new to making retro bikes and there are some very legendary names under its belt including the CB1300 Super Four which still looks drop-dead gorgeous even after decades of its original launch.

Recently, I got a chance to swing my leg over the new H’Ness CB350 which though doesn't technically belong to the original retro family but still benefits from the same 'CB' name tag. Also, what’s interesting is that it features a rather unusual name - H’Ness pronounced at Highness. Goes without saying, Honda thought on similar lines as the “Royals” of the segment.

<h2>Looks and design:</h2>With the new CB350 Honda has decided to stick to its philosophy of ‘keeping it simple’, so much so that the H’Ness is almost sedate looking, no-nonsense retro classic bike. Design-wise it looks neat and seems to have taken inspiration from the original CB range. From its circular front headlamp, long and wide fuel tank with the retro-styled Honda badging, single-seat, and dual-tone colour theme, the entire package is an ode to Honda roadsters from the past.

It gets 19-inch front and 18-inch rear alloys which are shod to MRF tyres. The design of the alloys complements the neo-retro silhouette and even the fenders are finished in chrome. Moreover, the slightly upswept exhaust also sports chrome finishing.

Not to miss out on the modern bits the bike carries. For starters, the entire lighting package is LED, the turn indicators have an outer ring which is illuminated all the time, with the round-shaped blinkers. Also, one of the key highlights of the CB350 is its semi-digital instrument console. This panel houses a speedometer which is a single-pod analogue unit. It also gets a small digital screen displaying a long list of informatics including a clock, fuel gauge, gear position indication and much more.

The left side of the handlebar sports switchgear including buttons to scroll through the menus on the digital display. While the overall quality of the switchgear speaks for itself, the horn button position has been swapped for the turn indicators (like in other modern premium Honda bikes). And it takes quite a while before you get a hang of it. Basically, there are two iterations for customers depending upon how much they are willing to spend. The more affordable base DLX variant gets basic paint, single horn and there is no phone connectivity option while the top-spec DLX Pro variant is offered in dual-tone colours and twin horns, along with the Honda Smartphone Voice Control System (HSVC). Other features on the bike also include Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), Assist and Slipper Clutch, and Dual Channel ABS.

Engine and performance:

The CB350 has been developed to take the fight off against the already established rivals in the 350 cc category. The firm studied the competition and aimed for what some buyers were missing from the then-existing offerings - refinement and ease of riding, but in the process, a crucial element was lost - thrill.

The output from Honda's new 349 cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine is more than the rivals on paper at 20.8 bhp/ 30 Nm, but how it translates to real-life riding is quite the opposite. The powertrain seems to lack the sense of urgency and peppiness expected from a platform like this. Also, the slightly taller gearing needs to be reworked as the transmission requires constant shifts when riding in a sporty manner. I found myself using the third gear in most parts of my commute which allowed me to hover around in its powerband which is considerably sleek.

On the other hand, the overall refinement levels from the counterbalanced powertrain are impressive and certainly, one of the best in the game. Also, the bike benefits from slip and assist clutch that helps to deliver a light feel on the lever.

Ride, handling and comfort:

You sit nice and relaxed on the CB350 despite the road conditions and the 800 mm seat height is also not tiring, to say the least. The handlebar is in well reach and the footpegs are mid-set for a friendly riding position. Overall, the ride quality is also quite nice and comfortable, and even after thrashing the CB350 over crater-sized potholes and speed breakers, it behaved like a good child.

At a kerb weight of 181 kg, the H'Ness CB350 feels light in action and at the same time manages to remain stable on high speed runs. When cornering, the half-duplex cradle frame provides a surprisingly balanced performance and clearly delineates that it is also ready for a bigger engine when the time comes.

When launched last year, the H'Ness CB350 was priced at ₹1.85 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base and ₹1.90 lakh (ex-showroom) for the higher-spec DLX Pro trim, but recently it has become costlier by up to ₹2,500. Well, it does demand a slightly higher price tag over everything else in its competition, but it still manages to make for a strong case for itself, especially seeing the level of quality and features it offers. Also, although it may not have a legacy to speak of, it certainly is a well-rounded product that is here to stay for a long time.

If you are looking for a premium commuter bike in the 110-cc segment, Honda Livo can be a good option. First launched in 2015, Honda Livo has unveiled its BS6-compliant version in 2020 and that remains the last updated version of the vehicle.

There is a semi-digital instrument cluster that includes analogue speedometer and odometer, digital tachometer, digital tripmeter, and low fuel indicator. It comprises a clock, killswitch, and service due indicator too. 

 

 Honda Livo Performance: 

 

The 109.51-cc engine is air-cooled and four-stroke. While the peak power stands at 6.47 kW at 7,500 rpm, the max torque stands at 9.30 Nm at 5,500 rpm. The multiplate wet clutch will offer its service for a four-gear system. While the suspension in front is telescopic, the one at rear is five-step adjustable with hydraulics. The braking system is handled by a combi brake system. Livo picks up decent speed while riding in city traffic, but one can feel vibrations and noise in speeds north of 65 kmph. Many owners have claimed a solid mileage of 60 kmph with this bike.

And naturally, so, this is an extremely important product for the company. It marks Honda’s return to the 100 cc segment in over a decade, at least since the brand was Hero Honda and the Japanese giant is taking the fight to erstwhile partner Hero MotoCorp, one of the leaders in the 100 cc segment with the trusted Shine name, an all-new engine and chassis. Can <a class="manualbacklink" target="_blank" href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-bikes/honda">Honda</a> deliver yet another simple and solidly built product like it did before? This isn’t Honda’s first dabble in the mass-market commuter segment. The two-wheeler giant has had offerings like the Dream Yuga and CD110, both powered by 110 cc engines. But the 100 cc segment remained elusive to the brand since its split with Hero. The segment today commands a whopping 28 per cent market share and though it’s on a decline at the moment, Honda is confident it can still capture a substantial chunk with the new Shine 100.

<h2>Honda Shine 100 - Design</h2>Honda is banking upon the trust created by the Shine 125 - its bestselling motorcycle in India - to trickle down to the Shine 100 as well. The styling is all too familiar with the triangular halogen headlamp, slim fuel tank, five-spoke alloy wheels, and slender frame. The body graphics are also reminiscent of the larger Shine 125. The bodywork is simple and not too fancy and it’ll be difficult to tell the Shine apart from some of its rivals. However, as we’ve seen in the past, familiarity goes a long way in creating trust in the commuter segment. There’s a reason why the Hero Splendor or Bajaj Platina haven’t seen major updates over the years. So, keeping things familiar may not be a bad thing at all in the Shine 100’s case either.

The overall build is basic and so are the quality levels. But everything feels sturdy - from the switchgear to the pillion grab rail. The instrument console remains simple with a speedometer, odometer and other essential tell-tale lights. The Shine 100 is also the most affordable ICE motorcycle to get a self-start. The rearview mirrors are wide enough for a good view of what’s behind and the light kerb weight of 99 kg makes managing the Shine 100 very easy to manage on a standstill.

<h2>Honda Shine 100 - Ergonomics</h2>The ergonomics of the Honda Shine 100 are also on point. It gets a wide handlebar with centre-set footpegs that will keep you comfortable even after a day’s worth of riding. The slim fuel tank does take some effort to hold on to. For the pillion, there’s ample space and the same can also double up to carry luggage, which is a common factor with motorcycles in this segment. There are several hook points (not intentionally) as well to fasten a bungee cord on the motorcycle.

<h2>Honda Shine 100 - Performance</h2>The Shine 100 is a classic example of why keeping things simple works out the best. Power comes from the newly-developed 98.98 cc single-cylinder, fuel-injected engine tuned for 7.2 bhp at 7,500 rpm and 8.05 Nm of peak torque at 5,000 rpm, while paired with a 4-speed gearbox. The motor comes with ESP and fuel injection and is now OBD2-compliant and E20 fuel ready, in line with the latest emission norms. So yes, it’s a modern-day package but the construction is pretty simple and so the cost of maintenance should be low as well.

The engine impresses with its low and mid-range performance, which is where most of the power is concentrated. Keep it under 60 kmph and the bike will feel sublime, ready to tackle almost anything. The long ratio four-speed gearbox makes the engine super tractable allowing for minimal gear changes. The gear shifts feel solid and not too clunky while it uses a heel and toe shifter like other traditional commuters.

Move beyond that and you will see the lack of refinement immediately. Vibrations are most apparent at speeds over 70 kmph and you feel them notably around the footpegs and handlebar. The engine too gets quite vocal at higher speeds and not in a good way. The strain is quite apparent and that does sour your riding experience. The small displacement is also more apparent when climbing gradients. This rider is on the heavier side and I did find it stressful to climb uphill, which will also be the case for an average-sized rider with a pillion. But that’s pretty much the only nitpick I’d like to make from the motor. It does nearly as told and at decent speeds, it should keep the owners comfortable.

<h2>Honda Shine 100 - Handling and Ride Quality</h2>The Shine 100 is not a corner carver by any means and gets a little wobbly around a sharp bend. The slender frame and slim tyres aren’t exactly designed for cornering action but on most curved roads, the bike offers sufficient ability to handle itself with ease. The Shine 100 also impresses with its ride quality. The slim telescopic front forks and twin shock absorbers at the rear do a fairly good job of keeping you comfortable. The rear feels slightly stiffer while the 677 mm seat is long enough to accommodate the rider and pillion.

The Shine 100 is also pretty accessible with a seat height of 786 mm. That’s inviting for riders of all sizes, without compromising on the ground clearance at 168 mm. We were largely riding on paved roads with the occasional rough road and the bike made its way through most undulations with ease. The ground clearance should be good enough to tackle some nasty bumps as well. Braking performance comes from drum brakes on either end with a combi-braking system as standard. The feedback on the brake lever is average at best and we would’ve liked a sharper bite from the braking setup.

<h2>Honda Shine 100 - Fuel Efficiency</h2>Honda Two-Wheelers India has not revealed the fuel efficiency figures on the Shine 100 but claims to be segment-leading. Most commuters in this space offer about 65-70 kmpl and the Shine 100 should be on par with the same. However, we will get a clearer idea of the same once we test the motorcycle in person in real-world conditions.

<h2>Honda Shine 100 - Price</h2>The Honda Shine 100 is priced at ₹64,900 (ex-showroom, Mumbai) for the single fully-loaded variant on sale. This makes it more affordable than the Hero Splendor+ and the HF Deluxe by a good few thousand rupees, while also undercutting the Bajaj Platina 100 in the segment. Honda is offering a three-year warranty as standard on the motorcycle with the option to extend the same by an additional three years.

<h2>Honda Shine 100 - Verdict</h2>The Shine 100 brings a lot of familiarity with itself in the quest of appealing to a conservative buyer. The Shine name, familiar design language and a simple motor are all things we appreciate about the bike and so will the customer. The motorcycle keeps the template simple and that allows customers to utilise it as they please. The Shine 100 checks all the right boxes when it comes to a no-nonsense commuter motorcycle that’s reliable and efficient. The pricing too is on point and that will play a big role in helping buyers make their decision. However, we now eagerly wait to see if the Shine 100 can win the customer’s trust, which will make all the difference.

The engine gets fuel injection, eSP and an ACG starter motor for a silent and jolt-free starting procedure. Honda has now repositioned the fuel pump to the outside of the fuel tank. This has been done for easier access and a reduction in maintenance time.

<h2>2023 Honda SP125: Features</h2>Honda SP125 is equipped with a LED headlamp, engine start/stop switch, integrated headlamp beam and passing switch, side stand cut-off and a digital instrument cluster. Honda Unicorn 
 
The Unicorn nameplate, which was formerly available in two forms – CB Unicorn and CB Unicorn 160 – will now be confined to just one model, dubbed simply 'Unicorn.' It's also compliant with the soon-to-be-enforced BS-VI compliance standards. On the surface, the Unicorn hasn't undergone any dramatic alterations. It maintains the same no-frills commuter design, which appeals to the target clientele. It comes in three colour variants: Pearl Igneous Black, Imperial Red Metallic and Mat Axis Gray Metallic. 
 

 Looks and built: 
 

A single-pod halogen lamp is included at the front of the commuter motorcycle. The headlight is encircled by a front cowl with chrome accents and a chrome branding on the fuel tank gives the overall package a more premium appearance. While the design remains the same, the current version of the motorcycle features a higher ground clearance (8mm) and a longer seat (24mm) than the BS4 model. The rear HET tubeless (Low Rolling Resistance) tyre is also new on the updated model. A fuel metre, dual trip metres, an odometer, speedometer, clock, and tachometer are all shown on the all-digital instrument console. This Unicorn bike has a fuel tank size of 13 liters and weighs 140 kilogrammes. 
 

 Riding ergonomics: 
 

The foot pegs of the Honda Unicorn are situated forward, allowing for an upright seating position. Telescopic front forks and a rear monoshock make up the suspension system. The commuter bike has a long seat that can accommodate two people comfortably. 
 

 Engine and Power: 
 

The mechanical improvements come in the form of a larger displacement engine. A 160cc PGM-FI HET (Honda Eco Technology) engine powers the Unicorn BS6 motorcycle, which produces a power of 12.73 bhp and a torque of 14 Nm. A counterweight balancer is included in the BS6 model to help reduce vibrations and a five-speed transmission is connected to the motor. A stop switch for the engine is also included in the package. 
 

 Safety Features: 
 

The AHO feature is one of the best safety features featured in the Honda Unicorn commuter bike. The AHO illuminates the road regardless of the light conditions or the type of weather in which the rider is travelling. A combination of equalisation and CBS is used in the brake arrangement, resulting in a more efficient braking mechanism.
