Among the most feature-rich, sporty and premium electric scooters in India, the Ather 450 stands out. Due to its BLDC motor, it has a top speed of 80kmph and a 0-40kmph acceleration time of 3.9 seconds. The electric motor produces 5.4kW of power and 20.5Nm of torque. The Ather 450 boasts a 7-inch touchscreen instrument cluster with Google Maps navigation, digital document storage, and 24X7 connectivity with an in-built SIM and even over-the-air software updates. The Ather app lets you check your charge status, push navigation, view ride statistics, and book service remotely. 
 
According to the manufacturer, the Ather 450 has a range of up to 75km per charge (claimed figure). The lithium-ion battery pack is located on the floorboard, making the vehicle more stable since the centre of gravity is low. There are three options for charging the Ather 450: Home charging, Public charging via Ather Grid, and portable charging.
 
In addition, Ather Grid fast charging points allow one to charge outside the confines of one's home. As an alternative, you can also use the scooter's onboard charger (sold separately), which allows you to connect it to a 5A socket and charge the battery pack.
 
The bike has a telescopic front fork, mono-shock rear suspension, petal discs at both ends, and a combined braking system as standard. With a delivery time of about 4-6 weeks, the Ather 450 is currently available in Bengaluru and Chennai. It competes against the Bajaj Chetak and the TVS iQube Electric.

It all began with TV Sundaram Iyengar, a Tamil Nadu lawyer-turned-businessman who recognised motor vehicles' potential to change lives and founded the first bus service in Madurai in 1911. Throughout the years, he passed on the baton to his sons, and his company expanded into automotive components manufacturing. In 1962, it partnered with UK-based Clayton Dewandre Holdings and began manufacturing automotive components under the name Sundaram Clayton. 
 
Almost two decades later, the brand launched India's first 2-seater 50cc moped, the TVS 50. This unassuming little two-wheeler really cemented the brand's reputation with its simplicity and reliability. This moped marked the beginning of TVS' eventful journey in the Indian automotive Industry.
 
Back in 1982, TVS dabbled in motorsports. The TVS 50 moped was stripped down and clocked insane speeds of 105kmph! In 2005, TVS Racing was created, which went on to compete in many motorsport events including rally, rallycross, and road racing. It was also TVS Racing that introduced one-make racing championships, which are attracting budding motorcycle racers from all over the country. 
 
In 2001, TVS and Suzuki ended their partnership. In spite of the tightening emission norms and the entry of newer competitors, TVS was still unfazed and launched Victor, India's first fully indigenously developed motorcycle. 
 
TVS Apache was released in 2005 in the Indian market. As a result of the Apache range, TVS' Racing genes became synonymous with the brand. Despite this, the Fiero and Fiero F2 were the ones that laid the groundwork for the Apache range. Bajaj Pulsar 150 and Hero Honda CBZ were meant to compete with these bikes.
 
To comply with the new emission standards, almost the entire two-wheeler range of TVS Motors has been upgraded. Norton Motorcycles, an iconic British brand, has also been acquired by the two-wheeler giant for Rs 153 crore.

In India, Bajaj Auto Limited is one of the oldest manufacturers of two-wheelers. Among its two-wheelers are the Chetak, Priya, and Super, geared scooters that made their mark in the Indian market. The company then had a 31-year partnership with Kawasaki that ended in 2017 and resulted in many interesting performance bikes for Indian bikers. With its Pulsar range, Bajaj became the most popular brand for affordable performance bikes. As well as its JV with Austrian brand KTM, the company builds a few bicycles at its Chakan factory. The Indian company has also entered into an alliance with Triumph Motorcycles to build mid-capacity bikes for the British brand. It is also the highest exporter of two-wheelers from India and has a presence in over 70 countries.
 
Bajaj Bikes are most popular in India with Bajaj Pulsar NS200, Bajaj Pulsar 150, Bajaj Pulsar 125 Neon starting at Rs. 59,104. Bajaj Dominar 400 is the most expensive bike model offered by the company, priced at 2.22 lakhs. 
The Bajaj Group was formed in the first days of India's independence from Britain. Its founder, Jamnalal Bajaj, had been a follower of Mahatma Gandhi, who reportedly referred to him as a fifth son. 'Whenever I spoke of wealthy men becoming the trustees of their wealth for the common good I always had this merchant prince principally in mind,' said the Mahatma after Jamnalal's death.

The name may sound Japanese; Okinawa is a very much Indian brand of electric scooters. The manufacturer offers six models of electric scooters for the Indian electric vehicles market. Okinawa boasts of guiding principles such as Go Green, Save Mother Earth, Clean Environment and Reduce CO2.
 
Okinawa Autotech Pvt Ltd, the makers of Okinawa scooters, ventured into the market in 2015. The company has its manufacturing plant at Bhiwadi, Rajasthan. The plant has a production capacity of 300 scooters per shift. The company manufactures four variants namely Ridge, Praise, Ridge Plus and i-Praise. The first product Ridge, a 45 kmph capacity electric scooter, was launched in 2017. Its second product Praise with 58 kmph speed was launched in the same year.
 
Okinawa launched its third variant Ridge Plus with the feature of a detachable Li-Ion battery in 2018. The company launched its i-Praise and Praise Pro, the 58kmph speed variants, the slower variants R-30 and Lite with a speed capacity of 25kmph in the year 2019. 
 
The company’s Okhi-90 remains the flagship product of the Okinawa brand. It is a high-speed scooter that can achieve 80 to 90 kmph with a range of 160 km. Okhi-90 is provided with an electronically assisted braking system. Okinawa is planning to launch the company’s motorcycle Oki-100, a cruiser type with a range of 160 km and 100 kmph speed capacity. The price range of Okinawa bikes start from Rs 62,000 to Rs 1.21 lakh for the top-end variant Okhi-90. The brand has a dealer presence in 121 cities.
