The Yamaha R15 is one of the best 155 cc performance motorcycles on sale and the full-
faired offering derives its design and styling from the bigger R1 in the brand’s lineup. The
Yamaha R15 V4.0 looks sharp and ready to hit the race track with its edgy design. The sharp
fairing is complemented by a sculpted fuel tank, while the nose-down, tail-up design ensures the
bike looks fast even at a standstill.
 
The Yamaha R15 further looks the part with its split seats and a sharply styled tail section
inspired by the bigger Yamaha YZF-R6. The bike rides on 17-inch alloy wheels and gets a host
of colour options sold in the standard and R1M guise. The 17-inch alloy wheels are wrapped in
100/80-section front and 140/70-section rear tyres.
 
Power on the Yamaha R15 comes from the 155 cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, SOHC, four-
valve, fuel-injected engine with VVA system. The motor was updated in 2023 to meet the OBD-
II norms, which can monitor emission levels in real-time. The engine produces 18.4 bhp at
10,000 rpm and 14.2 Nm of peak torque at 7,500 rpm, while paired with a 6-speed gearbox. The

display is specific to the R15M, the standard model continues to get the LCD unit with Bluetooth

Yamaha Motor has launched the R15 V4 in Japan updated for the 2024 model year. The 2024 <a class="manualbacklink" target="_blank" href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/new-bikes/yamaha/r15v4">Yamaha R15 V4</a> joins the 2024 R125, also launched in the bike maker’s home market. Both bikes get new colour options while retaining the same mechanicals. The 2024 R15 V4 gets a new all-black paint scheme ‘Black Metallic 12’, which seems to be inspired by the larger R7. The colour option is complemented by the new blacked-out components.

Up next is the new ‘Deep Purplish Blue Metallic C’ that is essentially a blue and black shade borrowed from the larger R1, and ensures the R15 looks a part of the R1 family. Lastly, the 2024 R15 V4 gets the new ‘Dark Bluish Gray Metallic’ shade that brings more flare to the full-faired offering. This includes the neon yellow finished alloy wheels complementing the bodywork finished with the grey-blue shade with neon yellow pinstripes.

2024 Yamaha R15 V4 Japan

Apart from the new colour options, the 2024 Yamaha R15 V4 retains the same hardware as the outgoing model. Power comes from the familiar 155 cc single-cylinder, SOHC, liquid-cooled, four-valve engine with VVA system. The motor is tuned to develop 18.1 bhp and 14.1 Nm of peak torque, paired with a 6-speed gearbox. The bike gets a bi-directional quickshifter as well as an assist and slipper clutch. The bike also comes with dual-channel ABS.

The 2024 Yamaha R15 V4 in Japan is priced at 550,000 Yen (approx. ₹3.08 lakh), which makes it nearly twice as expensive as the Indian version. The India-spec R15 V4 is priced from ₹1.82 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) onwards. The R125, meanwhile, is not on sale in the Indian market.

Yamaha has made a few changes to the FZ-S for 2023. It now comes with a new LED headlamp that does a decent job of lighting the road ahead while driving during the night time. There are new colour schemes that look premium especially if you get golden alloy wheels. The motorcycle does have a strong road presence because of the muscular fuel tank, tank extensions and low-slung headlamp. Moreover, once you are seated on it, you'll feel like you are sitting on a big motorcycle because of that fuel tank. However, from the side profile, the motorcycle might feel a bit awkward to a few people. This is because of how slim the rear section is when compared to the front section. Having said that, we did notice a panel gap on the fuel tank that did not align with the plastic piece.

The footpegs are also neutral set. At 790 mm, the saddle height is accessible for everyone. The low weight of just 136 kg also makes it easy to move around the parking lot. However, the turning radius is a bit on the higher side.

The suspension duties on the FZ-S FI Version 4.0 are done by telescopic forks in the front and a monoshock at the rear. The suspension setup is slightly on the sportier side especially because of the slightly firmer setting of the rear shock.

<h2>Yamaha FZ-S FI Version 4.0 Deluxe: Engine and performance</h2>The 149 cc, air-cooled engine produces 12.23 bhp of max power at 7,250 rpm and a peak torque output of 13.3 Nm at 5,500 rpm. Yamaha has made the engine compatible with E20 fuel. The engine starts going after 3,000 rpm below which it stutters if you are in higher gears. As the revs climb, the vibrations also start to increase and the engine starts to run out of breath after 7,000 rpm.

The engine is mated to a 5-speed gearbox that is surprisingly clunky. Yes, the motorcycle can hit triple-digit speeds but it does not feel very comfortable doing so. So, it is just better to ride the wave of torque and up-shift without stressing the engine too much. The motorcycle is clearly made for city usage and that is where it stays happy.

<h2>Yamaha FZ-S FI Version 4.0 Deluxe: Features</h2>Yamaha decided to update the instrument cluster of the FZ-S FI with a larger size unit, real-time fuel efficiency and average fuel efficiency. Having said that, the instrument cluster still does not show a gear position indicator. There is also a rev-limit light on offer that blinks when the revs are closer to the redline.

The motorcycle also comes with traction control which might come in handy when the motorcycle is being ridden aggressively. However, we could not trigger it during our ride despite riding it aggressively. We think that Yamaha should have offered a dual-channel ABS instead of traction control as that would have been more useful. There is also a Bluetooth companion application on offer that can show notifications but the rider needs to take out his phone to take any action on them. The application can also show the last parked location, vehicle alerts, maintenance alerts and fuel consumption records.

The FZ-S FI Version 4.0 Deluxe is for someone who is upgrading from a 100 cc motorcycle. It can comfortably do city speeds, is easy to handle due to its low weight and the seat height is also quite accessible. While the motorcycle seems decent, its price of ₹1,29,400 ex-showroom makes things a bit difficult. That is because the Yamaha FZ-S FI Version 4.0 Deluxe will have to go against motorcycles that are relatively newer than it. Maxi scooters are a new segment that has the potential to become quite popular in the future. In fact, they are becoming popular slowly. It still gathers a decent amount of attention on the road. Because there are still not a lot of Aerox on our Indian roads, it still turns heads and people want to know about it.

Up-front there is a nice looking wrap-around LED headlamp that does the job decently well, the switches feel nice and tactile. However, the usual pass switch now goes through the information of the instrument cluster. Because of this, every time the rider wants to use the pass switch, he just ends up toggling the information on the digital instrument cluster. The cluster itself can be a bit difficult to rear under direct sunlight.

<h2>Yamaha Aerox S: Is it practical?</h2>

Well, unlike your traditional scooter, the Aerox does not have a flat floor instead there is a huge spine that is right in the middle but there is still ample amount of space to put your feet. The seat has a stepped design so the rear occupants sit a bit higher while the rider itself keeps moving ahead because of the slippery seat. The floor space might not be there but the scooter does come with a decent-sized under-boot storage that is accessed just by pressing the button. The procedure is the same to open the fuel cap is the same, just hit a different button and the cap opens which is placed on the spine.

<h2>Yamaha Aerox S: Has the suspension improved?</h2>

The suspension was always the soaring point of the Aerox. It was the rear suspension that just felt too stiff for our Indian roads. So, many people who bought the Aerox upgraded the rear suspension. Now, Yamaha says that they have updated the suspension setup. However, now while the rear one is able to take in the bumps, it is the front one that keeps thrashing. So, this is something that one needs to consider seriously because after a while it becomes very uncomfortable.
