<p>MG Hector set the ball rolling for the company when it made its India debut back in 2019 and choosing this SUV as the first product was quite an obvious choice. The growing preference for this body type has meant that Hector has created a foundation for MG Motor India despite a long list of well-entrenched as well as newer rivals. And nearly four years on, MG has given the Hector some significant updates in a bid to continue finding favour.</p>

<p>MG Motor India may have launched the ZS EV, Gloster and Astor in the follow-up to its debut model but it is still the Hector SUV that is the biggest brand ambassador. Positioned in the mid-size SUV space that has as many players as there are in a cricket team - or thereabouts, the 2023 Hector continues to carry the bulk of the weight of expectations. While it has been favoured thus far for its three big strengths - dominant proportions, comfortable cabin and an exhaustive feature list, how does the latest model fare on these counts and beyond?</p>

<p><strong>Here is a first-drive review of the 2023 MG Motor Hector SUV:</strong></p>

<h2>2023 MG Motor Hector: What are the changes on the outside?</h2><p>Hector has always had a road presence and body style that tends to dwarf most other direct rivals. Visually as well as numerically, it is significantly bigger than the likes of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos while also appearing larger than the Tata Harrier on many fronts.</p>

<p>So while 2023 Hector obviously continues to retain its proportions because it is essentially a facelift, it tends to benefit even more now due to a much larger front grille which reminds many of the Lexus spindle grille design style. Complete with significantly more angular surrounds with dark chrome finish, and with diamond-themed inserts, the front grille is the most significant update on the outside and one that elevates the appeal manifold. There is a minor update on the headlamps that are positioned slightly lower on the face, while the front bumper gets a radar for the much-awaited debut of Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) on the model. The split-type LED DRLs have been carried forward.</p>

<p>The rear of the latest MG Hector now gets a LED tail light connect that stretches out on the trunk while the ‘Hector’ lettering is now positioned at the center and is bigger. The rear bumper has been updated - complete with a chrome garnish - and its cleaner appeal lends the SUV a more mature character on the back. From the side, however, there is nothing that stands out to signal that this is the new model with the SUV continuing to stand on 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels.</p>

<h2>2023 MG Motor Hector: Giant screen and a tech geek's delight</h2><p>The Hector continues to be offered in the five-seat layout but there is also still the seven-seat layout on the otherwise identical model called Hector Plus. As before, both models will continue to be offered side-by-side and get the same feature list as per variants.</p>

<p>Now space has never been an issue in the Hector and the updated model continues to offer a lot of room for passengers in the back. The seats are typically well-cushioned - a bit too soft, some may feel - while the large windows and the recline-function on the back seats would still make Hector an ideal highway cruiser.</p>

<p>But the comfort on offer is often overshadowed by the sheer feature list that the MG Hector boasts of and the updated model has been ornamented with more still. A mammoth 14-inch vertically-oriented touchscreen on redesigned dashboard is the stellar highlight. It is the largest - in portrait form - for any car in any segment in the country and the HD display is as sharp as you would expect. This screen on this test unit though was in desperate need of an OTA update because the touch interaction was rather buggy. The response to touch as well as interaction through voice command was perfect occasionally and outright frustrating at other times. Quite a shame but one that can indeed be fixed via OTA, I believe. The same is also true for the wireless phone charging functionality that had a mood of its own. Our iPhone 13 either didn't charge or went from 43 per cent to 45 per cent during one particular 30-minute session.</p>

<p>But when the systems do work as they should, the Hector is at its absolute best with highlights like ambient lighting, climate control with ionizer and even the mammoth panoramic sunroof - all being controlled easily enough. Additionally, the Hector can now be operated and even driven minus the need to carry a key ,via mobile application. This feature though was not tested in this review.</p>

<h2>2023 MG Motor Hector: How does it drive?</h2></p>

<p>MG has chosen to continue with the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol motor which is mated to a six-speed manual and a CVT, as well as the diesel engine with six-speed MT. There is no hybrid on offer.</p>

<p>This test unit was the petrol variant with CVT and moved on expected lines. The Hector remains an easy SUV to drive despite its big proportions and that's thanks big time to a relatively light steering wheel which makes criss-crossing through traffic easier than one would expect. Between 1,500 RPM and 2,200 RPM mark, the Hector is at ease but it still doesn't quite like to be pushed into excitement. Throttle responses are good but yank pedal to the metal and there is a very perceptible reluctance. This reluctance is only marginally better when the Sports mode is engaged.</p>

<p>The CVT unit also works on expected lines till one doesn't decide to inject ample doses of thrill. The numbers are ticked well and Hector ambles along like a gentle giant till, well, it doesn't. Here is a steady, stable SUV that is still well composed at high speeds. Considering its proportions though, body roll is expected and can be almost forgiven. Almost.</p>

<p>And perhaps the most intriguing aspect is the addition of Level 2 ADAS of which, we tested the Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist (LKA). Both worked on expected lines although the LKA function got deactivated on every curve.</p>

<h2>2023 MG Motor Hector: Verdict</h2><p>The Hector manages to build on its strengths and a packed feature list makes it quite a compelling option for someone in the market for a mid-size SUV. Its road presence will delight many while the space and comfort on offer are big strengths. On the flipside, there is no automatic on the diesel unit while the infotainment screen needs an urgent OTA update(s) to work as it claims it does.</p>

<p>The Hector isn't exactly made for someone who wants an enthusiastic - almost aggressive - drive every single time. For everyone else, here is an SUV that ticks most of the right boxes.</p>

The 2022 ZS EV will go on sale in India in July 2022, according to MG Motor India. The ZS EV was the company's first electric SUV in the country when it debuted in 2020, and now it's getting a mid-life refresh. The car's appearance has changed significantly, although its basic silhouette has remained relatively unchanged.

Excite and Exclusive are the two available options on MG ZS EV. The ZS EV has a price range of Rs. 21.99 lakh (Excite) to Rs. 25.88 lakh (Exclusive).

<b> MG ZS EV Features: </b>

The MG ZS EV fascia now has an enclosed grille instead of a deep concave arrangement, and the charging socket has been moved to the left side of the MG logo. The front bumper has been modified with a more aggressive look and a bigger central air dam with vertical intakes on both ends. The ZS EV will ride on updated 17-inch alloy wheels, with new tail lights and bumpers at the back. The previous-generation London-eye projector headlights with LED DRLs, LED tail lights, roof rails, rear spoiler, and ORVMs with side indicators will be kept. 
The new MG ZS EV facelift features a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic sunroof, a fully digital instrument cluster, a 360-degree camera, cruise control, drive modes, electric parking brake, air purifier, rear AC vents, a six-way electrically-adjustable driver seat, and wireless charging on the inside.

The same 50.3 kWh battery pack that drives a permanent magnet synchronous motor with 174 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque will power the 2022 MG ZS EV. It has a range of 461 kilometres and takes only 8.5 seconds to accelerate from zero to 100 kilometres per hour.

<p>MG Motor has a clear and unwavering focus on SUVs and the latest manifestation of this determined foray into the Indian market comes in the form of the <a target="_blank" href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/topic/mg-astor">MG Motor Astor</a> SUV. Not that the heavily-populated, intensely-fought mid-size SUV space in the country needed yet another player but there is still a large scope. And MG is hoping that <a target="_blank" href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/auto/videos/2021-mg-astor-track-test-review/41632985036269.html">Astor </a>is able to not just enter the fight as a fringe player but flex muscles to mount a credible challenge as well. It may not be easy but does the Astor have what it takes to compete?</p>

<p>The confidence that MG Motor is attempting to showcase was clearly reflected in the choice of the first-drive location in the invite that came - Buddh International Circuit! I'll admit I didn't quite understand just why would I want to drive a car like Astor on a track formerly graced by boisterous F1 race machines. &nbsp;But by the end of the afternoon session, some of the standout highlights of the Astor became amply clear. Interested, read on.</p>

<h2><strong>Take a track, Astor style:</strong></h2></p>

<p>I know what you're thinking. “Why test a car that on a controlled race track with the ideal conditions to bring out its starry highlights? What about broken roads, speed breakers, the grip on submerged streets, braking when the whimsical cattle suddenly decides to cross the path ahead?” I know because I share the thought.</p>

<p>And yet, it is really only on a race track that some of the other highlights of a car can be put to the absolute test without compromising on safety. As such, engine, gearbox, speed and steering are some of the key points I would focus on below, leaving factors like suspension for another day.</p>

<p>So, the Astor will be made available in two petrol engine options - a 1.5-litre VTI&nbsp;unit which comes mated to a five-speed manual and a CVT box, and a more powerful 220Turbo which offers six-speed automatic transmission. With helmet on, seatbelt firmly in place, the seat adjusted and ORVMs checked, it was time to head out for two hot laps of the circuit before bringing speeds down for a closer inspection.</p>

<p>What is likely to impress from the word go is the linear buildup of power from the 220Turbo engine under the hood. While it isn't exactly the most sprightly that I have experienced in a car in this segment, it sure doesn't leave you second guessing either. The response to throttle inputs are near instant and the engine gets the momentum going without much fuss. Of course, it helps that the transmission unit hardly breaks any sweat in recognizing and responsing to what is being asked for.</p>

<p>And once the speed does cross the triple-digit mark, the Astor continues to impress with its steady (near stately) traits. Straight lines are doggedly followed and sharp turns on the circuit were mostly managed with distinction. This is helped amply by the fact that there are three steering modes - Dynamic, Normal and Urban. What the first does is adds a bit more weight to the steering for enhanced feedback and control at highway speeds. The other two modes are primarily meant for better maneuvering in city traffic although I wasn't able to test its real-world benefits, if any, on the track.</p>

<p>That Astor does offer some customizable tweaks to the drive experience, however, is great and is more than likely to be a stable yet fun car on open roads.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Safety in numbers:</strong></h2></p>

<p>The one area where the Astor is likely to outshine all its rivals is safety and the Autonomous Level 2 - first in segment, of course - is the jewel in its proverbial crown. MG Motor has pushed the boundaries and pushed them far for others to play catch up. Astor gets a long list of safety highlights with as many as 27 of these being offered as standard. I was particularly impressed with the Forward Collision Prevention feature which issues warning or can even brake autonomously in an SOS situation. It can detect vehicles in front as well as pedestrians, and has the potential to minimize impact intensity if not completely rule it out in the first place. Then there is the Speed Assist System that can even read road signs to auto adjust the vehicle's speed gradually. And while one can choose to turn it off, having it activated can go a long way in ensuring you don't get those e-challans.</p>

<p>All of these are made possible by a series of cameras and radars around the car but then there are more 'plebeian' safety features too like &nbsp;Hill Hold Control, Hill Descent Control, six airbags, ABS+EBD, Brake Assist, Emergency Stop Signal, Traction Control System, Electronic Stability Program, disc brakes on all four wheels, 360-degree around view camera, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and more.</p>

<h2><strong>Astor exterior highlights:</strong></h2></p>

<p>Astor is near identical to its twin - the ZS EV. And yet, it has its own unique elements on the outside which seek to give it its own charisma. The celestial grille at the front, for instance, looks like the first cut scene from the Star Wars series. There are full-LED headlight units on either side, the alloy design on the wheels are new and the LED tail lights sit on either side of the trunk which gets the ‘Astor’ badge in a prominent form.</p>

<p>Interestingly, numbers suggest Astor is larger than some of its Korean rivals but visually speaking, it is somehow more compact. The boot too is smaller than some of its rivals and the loading angle may be a bit too high.</p>

<h2><strong>Astor cabin highlights:</strong></h2></p>

<p>Being an MG, the Astor comes loaded to the brim with a mile-long list of nifty feature additions. The list is primarily highlighted by the personal artificial intelligence (AI) unit which essentially works similar to the likes of Amazon Alexa devices. <p>There is also a lot of rear-seat space inside this SUV and three people here would likely be comfortable even on longer journeys. But while knee, leg and headroom is quite good, the under-thigh support is paltry.</p>

<p>Full marks to MG Motor for getting a product ready which plays to its inherit strengths rather than looking at engaging in a one-upmanship battle against rivals. Plush cabin, loaded with features and cutting-edge safety highlights are the inherent strengths of Astor even if it doesn't quite have the boistrous road presence of an SUV. Once launched, it will take on a long list of competitors which includes Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Tata Harrier as well as the just-launched Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq.</p>

Gloster is the biggest and most luxurious SUV from MG Motor stable in India. Powered by a twin turbo 2.0 litre diesel engine, it will make its debut in the premium SUV segment with the company taking aim at the likes of BMW with it.
To be made available in six and seven-seat configurations, the Gloster has a mammoth physical presence and a tech-loaded cabin with a segment-first 12.3 inch infotainment screen. MG boasts it will also be the country's first autonomous (Level 1) premium SUV.
With four terrain modes and 4X4 available, Gloster manages to tackle a wide variety of road conditions, all while Glo its occupants safe courtesy a plethora of safety features.

<p>Gloster is a tank. There, the first shot has already been fired. Now for the long haul. The upcoming offering from MG Motor is an SUV of massive proportions but bigger than its physical presence is the weight of dreams and aspirations it carries. For a company that is just a little over a year old in India, MG has shown it is not afraid of uncharted territories - look at the ZS EV - and nor would it be content in the trench warfare that the mass-market SUV segment has turned into. <a href="https://auto.hindustantimes.com/topic/gloster" target="_blank">Gloster</a>, then, slots in well with the promise of being the offensive machine with max firepower.</p>

<p>Too much reference to violence? Let's calm things down a bit and steer clear of metaphors as I seek to make sense of the multiple pages MG sent along with the review unit of Gloster, each filled with all that this upcoming vehicle offers.</p>

<p>I'll admit it was a bit overwhelming to go through all that MG is promising in the Gloster. Very overwhelming actually. And yet, each of these promises are clearly carrying the weight of expectations as the company pitches its offering against a wide variety of SUVs in the premium and luxury segments.</p>

<p>From how it stands and what is it like on the inside to how it drives and what safety features are on offer, here's a comprehensive review from the first drive test of MG Gloster SUV:</p>

<p><strong>How does it stand?</strong></p>

<p>Gloster is an imposing SUV. See all the photos I have added here? It's even bigger than what these suggest. Numerically speaking, the SUV stands 5,005 mm in length, has a width of 1,932 mm, is 1,875 mm tall and with a wheelbase of 2,950 mm.</p>

<p>Below is a comparison of dimensions between Gloster, smaller sibling Hector Plus and - purely for reference purposes, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.</p>

<p>While Gloster is a massive vehicle, it also seeks to have a planted visual appeal. It isn't bland but neither is it bling. Dominating the front face is a large chrome grille which emphasized a more bulky appeal rather than a sharp one. For someone who quite likes the Hector's stylish front grille, I wasn't too taken with the one on the Gloster but the sharp LED projector head lights with DRLs, inverted C casing around the fog lights and the bumper with a dash of chrome under it all add a contemporary visual character.</p>

<p>The biggest, and literally, highlight of Gloster's visual profile is at the side where the absolutely massive proportions of the vehicle is best viewed from. The windows are huge and are underlined by a silver lining which is also present ever so subtly on the roof rails. The large 19-inch wheels also do justice to the vehicle's proportion - thank heavens because MG has a notorious habit of putting puny wheels on its Hector and Hector Plus, while the dual-tone silver-black alloy design is familiarly attractive.</p>

<p>Over at the rear, Gloster's wide profile remains evident as ever and while the tail light design seems eerily familiar, it goes well with the profile. There is a chrome strip connecting the two tail lights but it is the massive Gloster badge that seeks to grab eyeballs here.</p>

<p>Overall, MG designers have done well to give the Gloster a dominant appeal that is not buried under kilos and kilos of cosmetics. Here is a butch player that has no ramp ambitions whatsoever.</p>

<p><strong>What is it like on the inside?</strong></p>

<p>All of the massive proportions on the outside clearly translates into a whole lot of space on the inside of the Gloster. And frankly, I would have been surprised had it not.</p>

<p>The six-seater review unit I had - there is also a seven-seat option - gets segment-first captain's seats in the middle-row while the last row has regular seats for two. Let's start from here then.</p>

<p>Unlike Hector Plus where the last row felt cramped and appeared forced, Gloster's final row is a mighty comfortable place to be in. In fact, even on long journeys, family members confined to this space won't be found grumbling because while the seating position is upright, there's manageable space for at least two in terms of leg and knee room. Three abreast - just in case - will have shoulders grazing but the one in the middle can choose to stretch out legs between the second row seats. That there are dedicated AC vents and cup holders are a plus but I could not find any charging point for my phone.</p>

<p>Step forward to the middle row and that's perhaps the place of pinnacle inside this car. The seats are well appointed, offer good cushioning and there's more than satisfactory levels of leg and knee room. The armrests add a touch of premium feel while smart storage space for phones on the right seat and twin foldaway cup holders on the left are nice touches. </p>

<p>Passengers can also control the air conditioning from the control buttons set behind the central armrest at the front while there's a USB and 12V charging socket sitting just under this.</p>

<p>The large windows mentioned previously add to the sense of space and natural light streaming in from here and the ginormous panoramic sunroof seek to put the spotlight on the emphasis on premium-ness here. That said though, the use of hard plastics in the lower half of the side doors stands out, also because it undercuts the fine fit and finish job done elsewhere. And while storage space for knick-knacks are aplenty, the bottle holders on the side doors are unlikely to shelter anything more than a can of Coke at best.</p>

<p>Getting in and out of the seats here is relatively easy because of side step bar on either side of the vehicle while there are dedicated handles that lend a helping hand as well.</p>

<p>And over to the cockpit, the front seats offer the same levels of comfort as the ones in the middle. And then some. MG has equipped Gloster with driver-seat massage functionality while both front seats are ventilated and can be warmed as well. The driver's seat also gets memory function for recline, reach and for additional lumber support - a rather common feature in cars from luxury car makers.</p>

<p>The super imposing floating 12.3-inch infotainment screen is quite a delight to just look at and can be used to access and control a plethora of features - from navigation and apps to air conditioning and more. Combined with MG's i-Smart platform which has an embedded SIM ready for 5G when it arrives in India and capable of getting OTA updates, the Gloster once again stays true to the company's tech-loaded character. Plus there are 12 speakers.</p>

<p>The dash once again gets soft-leather materials which are also present on the side doors. But the hard plastics make a comeback yet again on the lower half of these doors.</p>

<p>The center panel between the two front seats is an elegant expanse housing the familiar - and striking - gear control lever. Flanking it on one side are buttons to control seat ventilation and controls for the drive safety functionalities on the other. Just below it sits a smart dial for the drive and terrain modes.</p>

<p>And there are plenty of those modes for a more controlled drive experience.</p>

<p>The review unit I had had a 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine producing 215 bhp of peak power and with 480 Nm of torque. Eight-speed automatic transmission unit is standard.</p>
