The Volkswagen Tera is an upcoming subcompact SUV that will mark the German carmaker’s entry into the sub-four-metre SUV segment in India. Expected to launch in January 2026, the Tera will be Volkswagen’s smallest SUV offering in the country and will be underpinned by the MQB A0-IN platform, which is already used in models such as the Skoda Kylaq. With a strong emphasis on design, performance, and safety, the Tera is expected to appeal to buyers looking for a premium compact SUV experience in an accessible footprint.
The Volkswagen Tera price is expected to start from around ₹8 lakh, with top variants likely to cross the ₹12 lakh mark depending on the final specifications and features. Volkswagen is expected to position the Tera as a premium alternative in the subcompact SUV space with an emphasis on safety, technology, and build quality.
While variant details have not been officially disclosed, the Tera is likely to be offered in multiple trims across both manual and automatic transmission options. It is expected to come with a minimum wheel size of 15 inches on base variants, while top-spec trims could be equipped with 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. Multiple exterior paint schemes and dual-tone colour options are likely to be available.
Volkswagen is expected to offer the Tera with the familiar 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine. This powertrain typically delivers a fuel efficiency figure of around 18 to 20 kmpl under standard driving conditions. Final ARAI-certified mileage numbers will be confirmed closer to launch and may vary slightly based on variant and transmission type.
The Tera will be powered by Volkswagen’s 1.0-litre, three-cylinder TSI turbo-petrol engine, which produces 114 bhp and 178 Nm of torque. Transmission options will include a six-speed manual and a six-speed torque converter automatic. This engine is currently used in several VW-Skoda group models and is known for its balance of performance and efficiency.
On the features front, the SUV is expected to offer a premium cabin layout with dual digital displays—one for infotainment and the other for the instrument cluster. It will also come with climate control featuring rear AC vents, ventilated front seats, powered driver seat adjustment, and connected car technology with smartphone-based remote functions. Further features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ambient lighting, and a sunroof on higher variants.
Standard safety features across variants is expected to include six to eight airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, traction control, hill hold assist, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and a rear parking camera.
The Volkswagen Tera will compete in the highly competitive sub-four-metre SUV segment, going up against models such as the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon, and Mahindra XUV300. Additionally, given its platform and powertrain similarities, it will directly rival the Skoda Klyaq.
