Yamaha RX100: Overview

The Yamaha RX100 is a name that evokes nostalgia and respect among motorcycle enthusiasts in India. First introduced in 1985, the RX100 quickly rose to iconic status, known for its lightweight build, punchy two-stroke engine, and distinctive exhaust note. Although production was officially discontinued in 1996 due to tightening emission norms, the model continues to command a cult following. Yamaha is now expected to reintroduce the motorcycle in the Indian market, with the new-generation model expected to debut in December 2026. This new version will not retain the original 98 cc engine but will instead feature a larger four-stroke motor to meet modern performance and regulatory standards.

The original Yamaha RX100 was powered by an air-cooled, carburetted, 98 cc single-cylinder engine that generated 11PS at 7500 rpm. Yamaha claimed the motorcycle could accelerate from 0 to 60 kmph in just 7.5 seconds. Its reliability, low maintenance costs, and lightweight chassis contributed significantly to its success.

The new RX100 is expected to be designed as a high-performance yet lightweight motorcycle, possibly featuring a larger engine displacement to comply with current emissions standards.

In terms of equipment, the updated version could include a semi-digital instrument console, halogen or LED lighting, spoke wheels, and drum brakes at both ends to maintain its retro character.

As of now, Yamaha has not released any information regarding official offers or launch-specific promotions for the RX100. However, introductory benefits or loyalty programs could be introduced depending on market response closer to its launch in January 2025.
