VW reveals new Polo

What you are looking at is the facelifted version of the sixth-generation Polo. VW has made a number of exterior styling changes to the car and it now looks considerably more grown up. Unlike many mid-life upgrades, this one has been executed quite beautifully. The headlights now get hexagonal LED elements, a chrome strip at the bottom of the grille links both headlights, and the chin of the car is all-new. What's particularly nice is the fact that the wider wraparound section now also gets a metallic highlight that runs around the bottom of the fogs. There are fewer changes around the rear, but the car does get an all-new bumper and tail-lights.

The manufacturer has also worked on the insides of the car, which now look really attractive and are sure to be a huge draw, however, it's not clear how many of these changes will make it to the Indian market. That said, the new upmarket steering wheel, new centre console with a new colour display and new air-con controls lift the ambience in the cabin considerably. The steering, in fact, looks very similar to that of the Volkswagen Golf.

The carmaker is expected to launch the facelifted car in India around May 2014, and the range of engines are likely to remain unchanged. The 1.2 TSI, with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, will be the flagship of the range and the 1.6 TDi will be the most powerful diesel. The three-cylinder petrol and diesel motors will continue to be entry level motors.

However, VW's new 1.5 diesel engine, which the company has been working on for a considerable time now, is unlikely to make it in time for the launch of this facelift and will only go into production around the end of the year.
