Two-wheelers race ahead in Dec, but Hero Moto sales dip by 3%

Even as the domesticc car manufacturers are fighting a protracted slowdown, the twowheeler industry propped by a booming rural economy, posted a better-than-expected set of leader numbers Hero in December. MotoCorp was Market the e only aberration posting a declinee during the month.

The industry had posted a suc-ccessful turnaround during the festive months of September and October and was expecting the trend to continue in December as well. But, market leader Hero MotoCorp reported a 3.1% decline in sales in December, which broke the trend of 5 successive months of growth.

The last time Hero had reported a monthly decline in sales was in June. Hero's tally for the full year stood at 61,83,784 units, up 1% over 2012.

"Throughout the year, we have been setting new benchmarks on the sales front. We created a new record by registering 6.25 lakh sales in October 2013, becoming the first-ever manufacturer to cross landmark 6 lakh unit sales in India in a month," said Anil Dua, senior vice-president (marketing and sales), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. "Another major highlight was the record festive season sales of 1.2 million units in October 2013-November 2013. Going forward, we have put together plans to further consolidate our leadership position."

Arch rival and former ally Honda continued to post robust growth with a 36.2% increase in sales. Similarly, Yamaha too witnessed a near 37% jump in sales at 64,997 units but homegrown TVS registered just a 1.1% growth during the month.
