The BMW i3: An urban all-electric Internet-connected car
BMW's first-ever all-electric car, the BMW i3, will be officially unveiled on July 29, then displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show from September 12 to 22 before hitting dealerships by the end of the year. This city car has a 170 hp electric motor and high-performance lithium-ion batteries.
The BMW i3's electric drive can achieve a maximum speed of 93 mph (150 km/h) and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h) in less than 8 seconds. And all that with zero CO2 emissions.

The lithium-ion battery pack delivers an average range of 80 to 100 miles (130-160 km) in normal Comfort drive mode, which can be extended by about 10 miles in Eco Pro mode and by at least another 10 in Eco Pro+.
As an optional feature, the BMW i3 can be equipped with a REx range extender for a maximum range of about 200 miles (320 km) under ordinary driving conditions. The range extender is a 34 hp (25 kW) gasoline-burning two-cylinder engine, which fits next to the electric motor above the rear axle.
Recharge at dedicated charging station or in home wall socket
The battery pack can recharge to roughly 80 percent capacity in only half an hour at a modern public rapid-recharge point (50kW), or in the space of 8 hours using a standard home wall socket.
The BMW i3 is fitted out with ConnectedDrive, now available on all BMW models as a standard or optional feature, which enables you to go online in your car and surf the web on multimedia screens in both the front and back seats of the car.
The i3 will be BMW's first zero emissions mass-produced vehicle thanks to its electric powertrain. It will be followed in 2014 by the BMW i8, a truly sporty hybrid 354 hp model with an average consumption of only 0.7 gallons (2.7 l)/62 mi (100km).
BMW is already taking reservations for the first batches. You need only fill out a form online to be guaranteed first dibs on the electric cars soon to be rolling off the assembly line in Leipzig, and then finalize your order at a dealership. The prices will be announced in the fall.
