Smart makes electrifying Chinese debut

The compact car brand has become the first European company to launch an all-electric car in China.
As well as Europe, the US and Japan, the Smart FourTwo electric drive is now available to buy in China.
The tiny two-seater offers a range of 145km between charges but what it lacks in distance it makes up for in maneuverability. Still it's not that fast off the mark, but has an absolute top speed of 125 km/h, so it shouldn't struggle on the expressway.

It will be interesting to see if the Chinese car-buying public embrace the Smart as quickly as they have other European small cars such as the Mini, or if the Mercedes-owned company can carve out the same niche in Asia that it has in Europe. Despite its size, it's currently the most popular all-electric car on sale in Germany, while its gas-powered counterpart is a common sight on the streets of Paris.
