The new Regera, unveiled at the Geneva Motor show on Tuesday, is the Swedish supercar company's first plug-in hybrid and it boasts four engines and a total output of 1782bhp.

Regera is Swedish for 'to reign' and as such the car is aptly named as it is potentially unbeatable on both road and track.

Alongside a traditional 5-liter, turbocharged V8 engine are two small electric motors running to each of the rear wheels plus another electric motor in the crankshaft. And although the company's head, Christian Von Koenigsegg wouldn't be drawn on precise performance figures when he unveiled the car, it's understood it's capable of accelerating from 0-400kmh (250mph) in under 20 seconds.

But as well as an epic turn of speed, thanks to its electric motors, the car can be driven smoothly and silently around town, on battery power alone and can be plugged in or draw power from the traditional gas engine in order to recharge.

However, the car isn't simply about breaking records, even though it has more power on tap than any other current hypercar (a Bugatti Veyron Super sport offers 1184bhp and a Ferrari LaFerrari 950bhp), it is also about engineering ingenuity.

The Regera doesn't have a transmission; all of that power from all of the motors goes directly to the rear wheels via a hydraulic clutch and torque vectoring. The lever in the cockpit is simply for putting the Regera into reverse when parking.

By finding a way of mating all of the different motors to the rear wheels without a traditional transmission system, Koenigsegg claims that it has solved one of the biggest problems associated with building a hybrid -- extra weight and complexity.

Only 80 examples of the Regera will ever be built and will cost around $1.9 million each.
