Expect a rush of new car models as the domestic auto industry struggles to find a foothold in a sliding market hit further by high fuel prices.

Expect a rush of new car models as the domestic auto industry struggles to find a foothold in a sliding market hit further by high fuel prices.

French carmaker Renault kick-started the proceedings on Friday with its entry level sedan Scala ( 7-9.6 lakh). At least 9 more cars will follow suit in the next 40 days.

A couple of them are potential game-changers. Mahindra Quanto ( 5.5-7 lakh), India's first sub-4 metre utility vehicle, would be launched on September 20 and Maruti's keenly awaited new 800cc car ( 2-3 lakh) next month.

In between, some products should keep up the tempo — Tata Safari Storme ( 7-11 lakh), Mercedes B Class ( 25 lakh), Audi S6 ( 60 lakh), Chevrolet Sail ( 4-7 lakh), Nissan Evalia ( 7.5-11 lakh), Ssangyong Rexton ( 18 lakh) and BMW 7 series ( 90 lakh).

"We are banking on the festive season for a turnaround," said Michael Boneham, president, Ford India.
