Mercedes-Benz India is seeking an increase in the allocation of compact luxury cars, the A-class and B-class, from its parent plant in Germany for India, to meet the high demand for the two cars.

"When we launched the A-class, there were doubts if India was ready for such compact luxury cars. Going by our experience though, we can say India is ready. Today, one out of every four Mercedes-Benz cars sold in India is a compact car," Mercedes-Benz Indian MD and CEO, Eberhard Kern said.

The company received more than 400 bookings for the A-class in the first 10 days of its launch, while the B-class, in petrol guise, sold more than 500 units since its launch in September, 2012.

With regards to local assembly of the two cars, the company stated that it will only make that decision in 2014.

Mercedes also recently confirmed that it will roll out its first locally produced GL-class SUV from its Chakan plant in Pune on August 26, 2013. India will be the first country to locally produce the GL-class after Mercedes's mother plant in Tuscaloosa, USA.
