Corvette Stingray convertible to make world debut in Geneva

The Corvette Stingray was the star of the North American International Auto Show and Chevrolet is hoping to make an even bigger splash when it brings the car, along with its soft-top sister, to Europe this year for its grand unveiling.

Of the decision to choose Geneva, Susan Docherty, president and managing director of Chevrolet and Cadillac Europe, said: 'It's fitting to introduce the new Stingray convertible on the global stage at Geneva because Corvette is the face of Chevrolet the world over. It is an icon that has long been recognized and admired even in countries where it's never officially been offered.'

The company is keeping tight-lipped about exactly what to expect but as both the hardtop and convertible versions of the Stingray are designed on the same platform, Chevrolet is promising that the car's performance and drama will not be diluted by the removal of its roof. 'Every Corvette is designed at the outset as an open car,' said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer. 'The new Stingray is no different.'

The coupe version is the most powerful standard model Corvette ever produced. With a 0-100kph time of less than 4 seconds and a V8 engine that pumps out 450 horsepower, the car has perfect 50:50 weight distribution and can generate more than 1g in cornering grip.

The hotly anticipated open-top supercar will make its first public appearance on Mach 7 when doors open to the 83rd international Geneva Motor show in Switzerland.
