The automobile industry continued its robust growth in the passenger car segment, while the two-wheelers remained on a declining curve.

The car industry leader Maruti Suzuki India reported a four per cent increase in total sales during January at 68,107 units as against 65,341 units in the same month last year. The company said domestic sales grew by 2 per cent at 63,459 units as compared to 62,248 units in the corresponding month last year.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL total sales stood at 37,701 units. While the domestic market accounted for 24,301 units, exports totaled 13,400 units in January 2008. The cumulative sales for January 2007 had been 26,661 units.

ŠkodaIndia achieved sales of 1526 units in January 2008. With this figure ŠkodaIndia registered 47.9% growth in sales as compared to 1032 Units sold in January 2007. The sales figure includes 680 units of India's first Super hatch ŠkodaFabia. This brings the total sales figure of ŠkodaFabia to 1432 units since December 2007.

General Motors India has registered a robust growth of 46 % in sales in January 2008 as compared to the corresponding period last year. It sold 5517 units in January 2008 as against 3776 units in January last year. The January 2008 sales comprise of 1391 units of Chevrolet Tavera, 1174 units of Chevrolet Aveo, 217 units of Chevrolet Optra, 2639 units of Chevrolet Spark and 96 units of the recently launched Chevrolet Captiva.

Commenting on the impressive sales performance in January, GMI vice-president P. Balendran said, "The consistent surge in monthly sales is a clear indication of the success of all our carlines and demonstrates the fact that our flagship brand Chevrolet has been well accepted by the market and is growing from strength to strength. With the consistent surge in monthly sales, our key focus remains to address the changing customer needs while providing them world class products and best in class service".

Pune-based Bajaj Auto Ltd reported a 15 per cent decline in two-wheeler sales in January at 1,67,592 units as against 1,97,553 units in the same month last year. The company said motorcycle sales also declined by 15 per cent during the month at 1,66,492 units as against 1,95,560 units in January previous year. Three-wheeler sales also witnessed a 23 per cent decline at 24,601 units, against 32,030 units in the same month last year.

TVS Motor Company today reported a 22.92 per cent decline in two-wheeler sales during January at 93,385 units as compared to 1,21,147 units for the same month previous year.

However, exports rose by 85.96 per cent to 13,108 units in January as against 7,049 units in the corresponding period a year ago, TVS Motor said in a statement. During the month, motorcycle sales stood at 38,961 units, against 69,634 units last year, while in the scooter segment, 18,594 units were sold as compared to 20,534 units in January 2007.
