The three-door variant will be available at ₹ 31.85 lakh and the five-door version at ₹ 35.20 lakh. Both models will be made at the Mini plant in Oxford, England and will be imported to India as completely built units (CBU).
The car is powered by a 1.5litre 3-cylinder twin power turbo diesel engine that delivers 114HP of power and 270Nm of torque.
The three-door model will also get a petrol version — Mini Cooper S, which will be available from the first quarter of 2015, said Philipp von Sahr, president, BMW Group India. BMW currently has four Mini dealerships in India, at Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore. It is looking to add two dealerships next year, of which one would be in Chennai, von Sahr said.
BMW also sells the Countryman and Convertible models in India. All Mini models are CBUs apart from the Countryman, which is assembled in Chennai.
BMW said the Mini's sales exceeded the company's expectations, and that it is bullish on the overall passenger car market in India with things picking up after the 12-18 month slowdown.
BMW has sold close to 1,000 Mini units in India since it was launched two years ago. Globally, 2.5 million Minis have been sold so far.
