The R1200 R and the R1200 RS may be two very different motorcycles, but they're united by the same boxer engine.
The two new models, unveiled Tuesday at Intermot, in Cologne, Germany, prove that whether you hanker after a stripped back Naked bike or a faired sports tourer, the water-cooled, 1170cc horizontally opposed (or boxer) engine can be the ideal unit for pulling the strings and making things happen.

The R 1200 R weighs in at just 231kg, comes with ABS and traction control as standard (BMW's other digital handling aids are cost options), and offers up 125hp at 7750rpm which means that the company has been busy massaging the engine for better performance and for a more linear release of power across the rev range. And although it's presented as a 'Naked bike,' BMW wants it to be seen as a real long distance tourer that can be set up for comfort as well as speed.

The R1200 RS, on the other hand, which tips the scales at 6kg more, offers better wind and rain protection thanks to its half-fairing and adjustable windshield and that, combined with the more classical sportsbike riding position, should help it nudge the R1200 R in a straight line, anyway, despite the same engine and same performance stats. It also gets a digital dashboard with an analogue speedometer and if you tick the right options boxes when ordering you can get an Electronic Suspension Adjustment system that will enable you to switch between Road and Dynamic modes for greater comfort and confidence.
