BMW X1 LWB in India: 5 key highlights of the new long-wheelbase SUV

BMW has introduced the X1 Long Wheelbase (LWB) in India, adding a more spacious version of its entry-level luxury SUV to the company's local portfolio. The model is locally manufactured at the BMW Group Plant Chennai and was opened for bookings at an introductory price of ₹49.90 lakh (ex-showroom). Unlike a fresh launch announcement, the X1 LWB is now an established addition to BMW's India line-up, with its key appeal centred on extra cabin space and upgraded equipment.

Bigger dimensions

The defining change is the extended wheelbase. The X1 LWB measures 4,616 mm long, 2,104 mm wide and 1,641 mm tall, with a 2,800 mm wheelbase.

Compared with the standard X1, the longer body adds 108 mm to the wheelbase. This has been used primarily to increase rear-seat room, with 150 mm more legroom and 109 mm more kneeroom. Rear occupants also get seats with 15 mm of additional cushioning and up to 28.5 degrees of recline.

Luggage capacity is rated at 540 litres and can increase to 1,700 litres with the rear seats folded.

Updated cabin and exterior

The X1 LWB features Adaptive LED headlights with cornering functionality and BMW High Beam Assistant, along with 18-inch M light alloy wheels, aluminium-finished roof rails and 3D LED tail-lights.

Inside, the SUV gets a Widescreen Curved Display, electrically adjustable front sport seats, ambient lighting and a vertically stacked wireless charging system. A panoramic sunroof measuring 9 square feet and a 12-speaker, 205W Harman Kardon sound system are also part of the equipment package.

Petrol powertrain

BMW has equipped the X1 LWB with a 1.5-litre TwinPower Turbo petrol engine producing 156 bhp and 230 Nm. The motor is paired with a seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch automatic transmission and drives the front wheels.

The company claims a fuel-efficiency figure of 15.5 km/l. The SUV also uses a 50:50 weight distribution and a specially tuned Comfort suspension setup.

Digital upgrades

The X1 LWB runs BMW Operating System 9 with the latest version of iDrive. Its QuickSelect interface provides direct access to key functions, while Remote Software Upgrades allow selected vehicle functions to be updated over the air.

BMW Digital Premium adds connected features and services, while the MyBMW App enables remote access to vehicle information. The SUV also gets Digital Key Plus, allowing compatible smartphones and smartwatches to function as a vehicle key. The digital key can be shared with up to 18 users.

Safety and pricing

Safety equipment includes Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Assistant, Cruise Control with Braking Function, Automatic Emergency Braking, Pedestrian Protection and an Attentiveness Assistant. Eight airbags, ABS, Dynamic Stability Control and ISOFIX mounts are also included.

Parking Assistant and a rear-view camera are standard, while Parking Assistant Plus adds a 360-degree surround-view system. The Reversing Assistant can automatically retrace the last 50 metres driven.

The BMW X1 LWB was introduced in India at ₹49.90 lakh, ex-showroom. BMW also offers a two-year unlimited-kilometre warranty and two years of 24x7 roadside assistance.
